I Was Looking For A Job One Day...

<div class="IPBDescription">In the verry merry month of... September</div> Topic says it all... Yea, where can a 17 year old HS Senior go to find a job that will actually hire me?

I've applied at like 9,435,762 places and I can't figure out why I am not getting hired....

I am a hard worker... I love animals (I applied a Petsmart, where I was told that I was as good as hired. Then I tryed for a few weeks to call in to check on the status of hiring... Which convieniantly each time I called nobody in charge of hiring was there...)

I applied at a cybercafe (Told them I was a computer geek as suggested to me in the last "I need a job" thread I made and nothing)

I tryed Blockbuster Video, I tryed Wolf Camera (Where I was perfectly qualified for because of the choices I made in the selection of my classes in school over the past few years. I know a fair bit of knowlege on cameras, they hired some stupid guy...)

I was actually hired at 6 Flags... for about 8 hours... ((This was before all said applications) where I was hired, then I told the interviewer after she said "You are hired.", that I am a diabetic. That nite, I get a call from her saying that it's company pollicy not to hire people that have worked at the park before (Worked there 2 years before, so BS))

So yea...

I also applied at a number of fast food places, grocery stores and places like Target and K Mart...

Anyway, I need a job badly... Like more than badly... My mom can't afford to pay for things that I need (Senior pictures for one, that cost us food for a week. Not to mention the medication that I need to have to live + the medication she needs to live... (Healthy family, I know...)) and I would like a job to take some of the stress off of her and get some nice things for myself.

Does anybody have any ideas at all? Having no $$ really sucks... Give me good ideas...

well you can't really go around screaming, IM THIS, IM THAT! you need a good resume, and you need to put some job history listings in it. this way the employer will get a good deed at you.

How is your resume? Type-o free? Professional? Does it list enough good things about you? Even if it doesn’t request a resume, include one. It shows you’re responsible and ambitious.

How is your appearance? I know you’re applying at entry-level jobs, but professionalism really helps out. If you have piercing, remove them – throw on some kakis and a nice polo and talk to the person in charge of hiring at the time you drop off your application.

Keep following up, in phone and in person. Keep applying. Could just be bum luck. If someone tells you that you’re NOT hired, take it professionally, and ask them what their reasons are so that you can work on it.

PS… if you need resume help – I’d be willing to check it over for you.

well I assume you constantly harass them to process your application, turn up at random early hours seeing if they have had any no shows? :/

One tip: no matter how desperate you get DO NOT apply for a job as some sort of holiday character at the mall. It's not worth it, although it may seem good.

    And yes, try harrassment.

    1. Economy is a bit bad since this summer (at least around here), so some places just don't have openings. So, try to find places with "Now Hiring" signs.
    2. Have prior work experience. Yes, it makes no sense, but inorder to start working you need to have worked before...apparently.
    3. Apply at places even if they don't fit your interests (I see the grocery stores...and I'd assume you don't really enjoy groceries; but have you tried stranger places like card shops, pawn shops and ...Hobby Lobby ( <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) ?

I'm not really sure what handing in a resume at McDonalds is going to accomplish, so I'm not sure about that stuff; but with more sophisticated establishments, like this camera store place or a cybercafe, you'd probably want one (with relevant high school classes, and perhaps references you've helped on similar products).

The dressing well part is important (as is spelling correctly in resumes and applications), khakis and dress shirt works pretty well. Most employers also like to hear that you have reliable transportation (not that you should say. "Hey, I've got a bitchin' sports car!" but if you come on a bike, it's best to avoid it unless asked). Appear open and friendly! (...*shudder*... <i><span style='color:orange'>hiss</span></i>).

Have you considered: Toy Works, Hobby Lobby, Papa Murphy's, various pizza cooking establishments, Radio Shack (hot place on the board, it appears), Office Max, ...newspaper delivery boy.

Or wait until you're 18 and go for bartending, convienence store clerk or other slightly older age requiring jobs.

    And finally:
    4. meet people that work at your intended employment location: mooch a job off them.

Good job market? im glad to see a Bush/Cheney icon in yer sig.

aside from igniting flames, i'd like to say that a lot of places just dont trust highschoolers no matter how qualified. employers dont want to deal with the competition for YOUR time. the boss wants you all the time, and if school is gonna take up most of your daytime then what good to him are you?

    Duck hit it in one

    Resumes

just print up a few hundred, and start going EVERY WHERE.
Even if they are not hiring give em your resume.
    If they ask for desired Pay: Negotiable <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    Stick with it.

And what others have said also:
Get a nice set of cloathes (not suit, just chinos and a dress shirt or 2), use those when job hunting (it showes you can be profesional and are serious about finding a job).

I have only realy had summer jobs up untill my last 3 jobs.
But I have gotten them all in the same way.
My last job was a piece of poo, but I still took it b/c I needed the $$, just b/c you have a job dosn't mean you gotta stop looking <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeh mainly what he said, first impressions count a lot with the majority of job interviews that young people go for because more often than not the person hiring is not interested in your qualifications but is mearly looking for someone who can fill the position.

This is especially true with places like supermarkets and fast food chains but not so much with places like the camera shop you mentioned or the cyber cafe the latter will prolly want someone who knows a bit about what the job involves but again the first impression is gonna count.

Dress casual but not to casual if you follow. If your a goth or a skater your idea of smart or casual could be your potential employers idea of a friggen mess (sorry but that's how it is) so smarten up just for the interview, lose the rivets from your face (if you have any) and tidy your hair up a bit.

It makes me sick how much people change themselves for interviews. That "professionalism" is a load of BS, but unfortunately you have to play their game if you really wanna get hired. I mean, c'mon, is a fast food place really looking for a slick businessman in a suit and tie? No, but you have to get all dressed up nice anyway for your interview, no matter how dumb you're going to look in your McDonalds visor and shirt.

Maybe I'm just jaded because of how many potential employers have told me to cut my hair and shave. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Maybe it's because I woke up 15 minutes ago...but that paragraph is barely legible to me.

From the gist of it though, I'd have to respond: plenty of people with piercings and stuff work around here, they're alright. Generally you're asked to remove piercings where I work (aside from ear...but I don't have any). That'd be eyebrow, tongue and nose. Didn't have a bearing on my boss hiring some people - but my boss is rather lenient.

If you're 17 with experiance you shouldn't have too much of a problem; once you hit 18, or *shudder*, 21, a lot of employers start avoiding you like the plague. All you can hope for then is to have enough experiance to make up for the extra pay they'll be giving you. I'm 23 and just spent the last year unemployed, and I've got 6 years of retail and hospitality experiance.

Personally I work as a pharmacist in the UK, where the is a shortage, therefore 100% job security and high pay. I consider myself very lucky to be in such a situation, since it seems these days almost no jobs seem totaly secure.

Are you just looking for part time work? If so write a CV, then send it to every local bussiness you can. This is how I got my part time job in high school. I sent about 100 copies off and got three interviews, and ended up working in a local supermarket.

If its full time work your looking for, thats more tricky. Im not sure about the US, but in the UK we have goverment run 'job centers' where there is a list of all the free jobs. You just go there and get interviews. It may be different the US, since there is an excess of free jobs in the UK (although most are minial ones).

*EDIT* oh and te secret to psassing interviews, is just be yourself. Be confident, honest and have a clean apperance.

Ok, just to break some things people are saying:

    1) You don't need a suit and tie, infact DON'T wear a suit and tie.

wear a pair of chinos and a button down shirt (tuck it in if it is apropriate for the style)

    2) If you shave, make sure it looks good

    3) Be your slef and be confident.

    4) Make sure you state what type of work you are looking for.

You are also about to ender the golden quarte (aka pre holiday shoping, black friday, etc etc) So now is a good time to get a part time job in retail. If you do a good job they might offer to keep you on.

    And for refferance:
I just started a job at radio shack.
    I look Like:
    <a href='http://www.sharemation.com/thansal/ME2.jpg' target='_blank'>This</a>
Note the scrufy beard, the long hair, etc etc. (switch to ME1 is you want ot be scared by a large version)

all I did was trim the beard and what not. My District manager asked if I would shave the beard, I said I was attached to it, he said ok.

The dress code for radio shack is:
Lt Blue/white oxford shirt, chinos, belt/suspenders. Aka, casual buisnes.

If I can get a job at a place that requires that dress cod, you should have no wories <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
