The number of upgrade you get for a specific upgrade, such as Carapace, depends on the number of Chambers your team's Gorges have built.

Heres a copy/paste of what I said in an earlier thread - might help to explain the Chambers.

--

there are three types of chambers;
Defence
Movement
Sensory

You need one hive to place one type of chamber.

If you have one hive, you can only place one type of chamber.
Defence or Movement or Sensory.

If you have two hives, you can place two types of chambers.
Defence and Movement, Defence and Sensory or Movement and Sensory.

If you have three hives, you can place all three types of chambers.
Defence and Movement and Sensory.

Typically speaking, you can place as many numbers of types that you have already built.

This means, if you have only one hive and already have a Defence chamber type built, you can build, and only build, more Defence Chambers.

The way the upgrades work is like this;
Defence Chamber Types allow Carapace , Regeneration and Redemption.

Movement Chamber Types allow Adrenaline, Celerity and Silence.

Sensory Movement Types allow Cloaking, Advanced Hive Sight and Scent of Fear.

You are allowed one upgrade per type. That means you can not have Carapace and Redemption at the same time, regardless of the amount of hives, or chamber types.

Each chamber type allows one upgrade. If you build two Defense Chamber types, you get two upgrades.

There is a very high maximum limit on the number of chamber types you can build, however the maximum upgrades you can ever get of one type of chamber is three. You do however, have a maximum number of nine upgrades. Three upgrades per type of chamber.

Building more then three chamber types will not add to the amount of upgrades you can get. They do, however, have benefits to building more then three of the same type.

Defence Chambers will heal near by buildings and teammates.

Movement will allow you to teleport to your hive. Press your Use key near one to activate.

Sensory will alert you to incoming marines. It will also parisite any marine who touches it.

There is also the Offencive Chambers, but they act more like turrets and give no upgrades of any kind.

If you're a builder and have the time and resources to spare, walk up to your hive and build three chambers of one type under it. This guarantees level 3 upgrades no matter how many are destroyed out in the field. You may think it's a waste of resources, but level 3 carapace, celerity, and cloaking for your whole alien team are worth your sacrifice.

Also, I think you should build one movement chamber under each hive (assuming you have three). This way you can teleport from your respawn to another hive instantly.
