<div class="IPBDescription">(i got a good pc)</div> Okay, my problem is: Im having around 20 fps on large rooms in maps or in small rooms with alot of buildings, recently i even saw that on the hives not all polygons were shown (so i could look partially through it), this would be 'kinda' normal if i had a bad pc, but i dont...
My specs:
P4 1.7 Ghtz
Radeon 9800 pro (latest catalyst drivers, but didnt found where to turn off vsync...)
512 ram
Windows XP home
Game specs:
resolution: I tried both 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768, but no impovement
video mode : OpenGL
fps_max = 100
fps_modem = 0
Other info:
I have 2 monitors, but while playing i disable one (makes quite an improvement), I defragment whenever needed and dont run obsolete background programs (or i disable them).
I used to play NS in the past, but then i quit for some reason (was on WON at that moment), but now i reinstalled it (to steam this time) and it works worse than when i had an older videocard... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Please help, cause I cant play like this...

With you i believe on larger games like Doom3 your processor wont let the GFX card go to its maximum fps, but that shouldnt effect you in this game...
Could you explain more about the multimonitor thing? Just incase of course.
Try going into the options under 'Multiplayer/Advanced...' options and unticking some of the details, one of the options like 'High Detail Particle Systems' might not like your card.
I have 2 monitors (normal and tft) connected to my graphic card, and i use them as clones or both together so i have an extended (dont know the word, the thingie where your icons stand on <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) so i have a larger view.
But most games dont support this so i turn one of the monitors off (the input of course, not the power <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
I tried to play NS first with both monitors: i got one monitor with the game and one without but it kinda lagged... So I tried turning one off and it helped, but not enough to be normal...
edit: I tried turning of high particle and dynamic lights, but its still the same... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
dont know if it matters: decal limit is 300

If it's not the card, (which it certainly isn't,) it's probably a cominbation of one or more of the following:
Messed up configs = > Move them (all .cfg files,) to a folder called "old" or similar. Run NS. Default ones will be generated.
Graphics drivers. = > Visit ATi's website and download latest Catylsts
Rogue program => Adaware, Virus scanner, Spybot & Search and destroy. Stop using IE.
9 times out of 10 this solves the problem. Another interesting solution to lag I came across recently was to disable WinXP speech recognition. (CPannel, Speech.)
HTH.
Btw, word you're looking for is "desktop". <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Im doing adaware and norton virusscan right now, and im using Mozilla as standard browser...
Also, I downloaded the latest catalyst driver yesterday (think i did it right: first removing the old one, then installing the new one)...
Ill also disable the speech thingie and try, ill let you guys know if it works
ps: desktop, of course ! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Report:
adaware found nothing specia, neither did norton
um... how do i disable the speech ? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> dont see any option for that
also checked to defragment, but it wasnt necessairy according to winows...
also removed the configs, but still not any difference...
btw, ill try to add a screenshot, so you can see that the hive isnt even completely drawn (this is on all maps), also mind the fps while the view isnt even large <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> plz help
Either SP2 has done something to "Speech" or I am blind.
I'll look into it.

Screenshot is mad. Are you running NS in a window per chance?
No ideas as yet... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Nope, fullscreen...
Btw, rate = 9999 (i have cable connection)
<a href='http://www.omegadrivers.net/' target='_blank'>http://www.omegadrivers.net/</a>
ATi recommend them for people with problems like yours.
Personally I don't understand why you're experiencing problems with that setup. Turning V-Sync off would do more harm than good (vsync off is only useful if you get more FPS than your refresh rate. Since your refresh rate is at least 60hz this isn't the case here).
I have an Athlon XP2500+, 512MB DDR & Radeon 9600 Pro and even I can get a constant 100 FPS with high detail settings (although I keep vsync on & have my refresh rate set to 85hz since I like a decent looking game without image tearing as opposed to 15 more FPS).
Make sure you have the latest drivers for your motherboard and any sound card you may have if its not onboard.
You should be able to run in 1024*768 without problems. Try the Omega Drivers (do not change any settings in the 3D settings as they are tweaked for best performance with your card when you install them) and make sure all your other devices are running the latest drivers with no conflicts.
Post your findings and if there is no resolution in sight then I'll try & make you a config for higher FPS (at the sacrifice of image quality naturally).
My fps have risen to about 60 now (perhaps vsync is on now i installed those drivers ?) and the hive has its complete graphics once again, however there is still one little problem:
once in a while my screen just freezes for less than a second, wich can be very annoying when a skulk is dancing around your feet gnawing at your shoes...
(resolution : 1024 * 768)
Never heard of those drivers though, are they suggested for all gamers (also those without problems), and for all kind of games (eg Halo, c&c generals) ?
Furthermore, I used the drivers for my motherboard that came with it, since they worked well in the past, i dont think they form any problems.
*edit* I heard upgrading the bios could cause major problems if something went wrong...(also, do those bios drivers remain after a format, just to know ?)
And where can I see if there are conflicts between other drivers/devices ?
@Malibu Stacey: how do you get 100 fps with vsync on ? I thought that <u>prevented</u> from having 100 fps...
Yeah, im noob, but i gotta learn somewhere <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*edit* Retested NS with vsync of, i get around 70 fps, but in rooms with buildings i stay round 30 fps, which is surely to weak for my pc specs... could it be an NS issue ? Since I read some others had graphic problems as well... If not, any way to find the specific problem (without having to examine every bit on my HDs <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
Also, would a format be able to solve this problem, i could do it if neccesairy... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Sometimes adaware programs cant find these hidden programs slowing you down. Try using Hijackthis.exe (google search) though i STRONGLY suggest going to a forum with people to help you, you dont want to use that program if you dont know what your doing, but the forums easy guides and user help make it worth it.
to me that sound bad ^^
anyway me i get 60 fps constantly...
got 2ghz
nvidia geforce 5600xt
never goten higher :/
res 1270 x 10242
ram 512
and well on topic
i cant see why u cant get higher as i my self cant get higher then 60 for some reson
Anti Aliasing: 6x (max)

Ainsotropic Filtering: 16X (max)

Mipmap Detail Level: "High Quality" (max)

To Find these settings, Right click on your Desktop (in the middle of the screen where the icons are) Click "PROPERTIES" at the bottom, click "Settings" (at the top)
then click "Advanced" (Bottom right, under the colour bar) -- Next click "3D" then Select "OpenGL" on the left and click "Custom" on the right...
Also check the "SMARTGART" options (Tab at top) - mines AGP Speed 8x and Fast Writes ON...
in game, fps_max 101 -- and i get 100 FPS in game on level things, busy screens i get about 70-90fps and im running a Radeon 9600Pro 256mb, XP3200+, 1GB ram
Well, actually since i installed those omega drivers, my fps have improved to around 70 fps, but they are around 30 in busy screens...This is my main problem now, since i think it should be alot better with my pc specs...
(radeon 9800 pro - 1.7 ghz - 512 ddr ram)
My geforce 220 is capable of 60fps but since my processor is 1.2ghz it wont do more than 30pfs, 15fps when busy area.
(or anyone else if they know) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
bet u it works than all these tweaks they give u <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
i think its a bug with ati cards and the new version of ns
(or anyone else if they know) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
In the options menu click the Video tab. Click the drop down box that says. OpenGL in it and select Direct X instead. Then try a game. It helped me tremendously.
I downloaded the newest DirectX (9.0c or something) and installed it, and now my screen is much better, around 40 fps in crowded and 70 in small areas, also my images are a bit smoother now...
There is still one little thing that bothers and annoys me: sometimes my screen doesnt react very fast to my mouse movement, i checked my mouse and it is fine, so i guess there is still something wrong with my graphics... The just wont be good <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Anyway, if you know a possible sollution, I'd appreciate it... Im also considering to format my pc and install the newest drivers and stuff first and then steam, to test its performance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro and I can get 100 fps constant with vsync off (I play in 1024*768@85hz with vsync on though). Knowing what you're talking about always helps.
CyberXorpion you really should make sure <b>everything</b> in your system uses the newest drivers. This is because the manufacturers update stuff in them all the time to make them run better on newer games & more compatible with newer hardware. If you are still running with the motherboard drivers which came in the box with your motherboard this is probably causing you the majority of problems.
About the Omega Catalyst drivers. They will work fine with all games, they are the same as the default ATi ones but have certain settings optimised for 3D games. As I said before ATi recommend them for gamers with problems and support the guy who develops them.
Your idea of formatting your PC then installing the newest drivers & then Steam is probably your best bet for getting the best performance from your machine. Remember Direct X is a driver too.
<!--QuoteBegin-Kenichi-SNK+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Kenichi-SNK)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->If that '1.7ghz' is your processor, then its DEFINITELY gunna stop that gfx card from doing any further, you need a good 2.4ghz to get that gfx card even started!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Ignore this. The whole point of having a seperate GPU (aka graphics card processor) with its own RAM is so that your FPS isn't dependant on your CPU (aka motherboard processor).
motherboard
graphic card (omega drivers)
direct X
windows upgrades
These are the only ones that i can come up with <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> , i have an onboard sound card so i dont think there are drivers for that... and i dont think cdrom drivers can conflict with games (are there even drivers for dvd/cdrom ? )
I also think I'll make a seperate topic about what to do after format, since it can help alot of people ( if it gets a sticky of course <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
@Malibu Stacey:
If you can get 100fps in a high resolution, then it means something isnt working right here... Plz stay with me till it works <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*edit* is it my imagination or are there quite some people with these kind of graphic problems ?
Oddly if I raise my monitors refresh past 60, then i have trouble.
If 85hz, my game stays a flat 42fps.
Apparently if you vsync and have your refresh too high, youll get half your joint.
I know at 75 it toggles between 75fps and 37.
