Fable, or The Sims 2?
I've been a big fan of Fable since I heard about it. It was the kind of game that I could grasp, hold on to, and beat the absolute crap out of and it'd come back.
I bought the original Sims, and had a great time, but the games wide scope made me think more of "What I should be able to do" more than how amazing the game was. And Sims 2 supposedly fixes this.
Now, I trust Gamespy a lot. I've never disagreed with a review from them(much like I've never disagreed with PCG). And they rate The Sims 2 as 5 out of 5, and Fable as 4 out of 5. The downsides to fable? Things I could easily handle/overlook. The Sims 2 though, I haven't been as excited for, but they honestly couldn't find much wrong with it except for what total dedicateds(i.e.- not me) would want.
I can't choose. So, I choose you to help me. To help you help me, I'll give you the two reviews. Look at them or not, I need a solution...badly. I call on you! Please! <3

Based on actual knowledge of the games and (...fairly) unbiased opinion: Fable.
Reasons for the choices:
1. The Fable review seemed a bit too into what wasn't there instead of what was there. Instead of telling you about the game he tells you about what he wishes was there in an overly simplistic way. Specifically, as an example, how you can't play as a female - where a reviewer should know that it would be twice the work making the models and code for a female - not just changing what the main character says and how opposing genders react.
2. Fable would have a much longer time than 15-20 hours - provided you don't plan to go through just the main story. I believe it was the IGN review that talks about fairly spontaneous events that can happen while you're exploring (I think it was meeting a merchant on a road).
3. Fable would have more replay value than the reviewer seems to hint at (I know I'll play it once according to how I'd really play (...like I always try to (ala Fallout, KotOR, Morrowind), and then go at it again based on more evil or more holy principles .
4. Sims 2 was played and reviewed by someone who obviously loved it before he picked it up (considering Fargo has had numerous pages about the game), so you might not like it as much.
5. Overall, both games will probably suit you for a long time, but Sims 2 would probably give you a longer play time (depending on how fast you get board, if designing homes is your thing, if making people cry gives you happiness, if controling people psuedo-indirectly makes you happy, etcetera).
6. You can beat up whiney little kids in both games (mentally in one, physically in the other), so it's win-win either way.
Personally, I'd go with Fable (I even tried to preorder it today, but it's too late, and already been shipped - and they damned well better have a copy waiting for me anyway). However, looking over this Sims 2 stuff, makes me feel it's something that'd be worth buying sooner or later (probably during next summer or before).
It probably depends a lot on your tastes. Ask yourself if an RPG is more fun than a simulator. If action is more fun than thinking and designing. If 150 hours of play time is that much more important than 80. If playing a fantasy you is better than controlling lots of fantasy other people. and if watching virtual people do it is better than watching a censored virtual you do it.
[...go with a 2/3 or 3/5 on those questions maybe ]
How?
- Updates to the game.
- Bug fixes.
- MASSES of downloadable material very quickly, possibly because it may be...
- Hackable (in a good way)
Dont look to the "today" look to the "6 months from today"
Fable is nothing more then a canned RPG world. Yes, there's lots and lots of stuff to do and things to buy, but from what i can tell your goal is, and always will be, "kill this enemy to end the game in victory" How can i know this? They said you could buy every house, level every skill, and kill everything in the entire game world. Once that's done, there's nothing left to do BUT finish the game. What's worse is that the gameplay time required to finish it is about 15 hours.
"You can play Final Fantasy as many times as you like, kill as much as you like, and buy as much as you like, but you still have to kill Chaos to win the game."
Fortunetly, Sims 2 doesn't have that issue to deal with. I mean, common! Some situations are pure comedic gold... Can't see how Sims 2 could ever get borring, as the interactions between the characters are nearly endless. Hell, you could even engineer designer situations between groups and get something like a feud going on. And, with the possibilty of modifications to Sims 2, you could probably even see weapons, wars, and some really interesting stuff.
Personally, I hate the sims and games like it. I got so utterly bored playing it, I couldn't understand how people liked it so much.
Now if it was Burnout 3?
But i'd buy the sims 2 anyway.
Oh, and get Black and White 2 when it comes out, its much cooler them the sims 2.
The only reason i can see to buy Sims 2 is purely to ensure that someone else won't make the mistake of giving them money.
That's a good idea, everyone join me, go out, buy as many copies of Sims 2 and burn them, that way people won't be subjected to the idiotic timewasting that is the Sims 2.
