B5 Mouse Sensitivity

changing, or am I paranoid?
I'm experiencing this constantly in beta 5, and I want to know if anyone else is getting similar problems or if I've just become paranoid in my old age. My mouse sensitivity seems to change at random. I have a small mousepad, so my way of optimizing my mouse is to get it where I can do a 180 turn with a flick of the wrist. I had it set up like this before with no problems in b4a. Now with b5, when I get the sens right where it feels good, it seems to change on me the next round. Or when I evolve to a different lifeform. Or when I pick up a different gun.

If there's a real issue here, I'll go post it in the bug forums, but I'd like to know if something is really going on first. What is anyone else's experience?

I was once telefragged as a fade because of it : blinking at a freshly beamed marine , and all of a sudden staring at the ceiling for no reason. Marines were all laughing , I was left speechless...

I'm generally less effective in beta 5 as a skulk , lerk or vanilla rine , too.

What's your mouse Bob? Give the geeks some specs.

I have random problems with my mouse occasionly.. but they've been plaguing me all the time in NS.

I am using an Optical USB Mouse is directly connected to the port no fancy RF or IR ports here.

But occasionally the mouse will freak out (during normal use) and I'll spin round like crazy and look at the ceiling.

If I move the mouse it interrupts this movement but I will be staring at the ceiling.

It could be something wrong with my table but its nice and flat and reflective and I've never experianced my mouse going crazy like this outside of NS (during surfing for example)

And just before I give any techno babble I see it mostly happening as a Marine... Never as a skulk or fade (although I must admit our rarely played by myself as I try to be the gorge in NS and CO games that heals players and keeps that fade alive)

Now for the techno stuff : Microsoft USB Basic Optical Mouse. 3 Mouse buttons (Inc Mousewheel) used on flat surface wooden desk.

PS (feels like a bug report really)

Got the same for DayofDefeat a long time since Steam upgrade so and so. It doesn't happen in other games just steam. Really don't know whats with it. Maybe in one update they changed something to the controls that makes my hardware configuration go crazy?

Mx500 plugged in usb. Got it in ps2 before but it was even worse.
One of my Dod Clanmates has the same problem.. also optical mouse. Never heard of any problems with other games or non optic mice. Maybe the new steam doesn't like optical that much?

reflective surfaces dont work well with optical mice (ie, dont use a mirror) but i dont know what you have. try using a different mousepad. also, check your mouse 'acceleration'. mouse accel + lag could be the problem?

Nah. Its not the surface. I got an everglide pad. And it works just fine in "every other application".

    Opera - no problems
    Warcraft 3 - no problems
    Natural Selection - no problems
Day of Defeat - mouse lags like hell

I tried cleaning the mouselaser and the pad and changing any mousessetting I could find. But its still there.

Tyrain make sure you arn't using D3D on half-life.. I found GeForce cards+half+D3D= laggy game play and mouse movement.

And when I say reflective surface I mean its dark enough for the optical mouse to see as opposed to being light which makes it blind

Logitech mx510. Smooth as silk most of the time. And I'm not talking about sudden wild jumps (you get that with older or cheaper opticals, I used to get that with my old ms intelli), I'm talking about the different between sensitivity 6 and sensitivity 6.25 in console. Maybe it's not as noticable if you don't play obsessively often, but my twitch firing is off. It's most noticable on shotgun and on melee attacks. A twitch that by all rights should leave the enemy under my crosshair or centered under my swipe or bite, is just off. I can't explain it any better than that, I'm afraid.

It's just that it's the same effect I get by changing my sensitivity and trying to play that way. Twitch aiming doesn't work, because where I expect the mouse to move to, it doesn't move to. So that's why I get the feeling that b5 is somehow changing mouse sensitivity on the fly, even though checking it in console it appears exactly the same.

I've had my mouse freeze on me for a few seconds, but its only happened once so I'll blame the mouse for now.

I tried everything in HL to make it work. OpenGL, D3D and tuned the resolution. But it didn't help. Maybe it really is the underground. I'm using a dark riffled everglide pad. But its only happening in DoD...

The default_fov has an effect on sensitivity. I think it was changed from 100 in beta4a to 90 in beta5. Also note the default_fov effects sensitivity even if there is no visual difference.
Somewhere in ns (i think the options with the force default fov) it says that the field of view changes on some lifeforms for cosmetic effects, i didn't think it did anything anyway.
Your solution would be to find the value of default_fov in beta4a then copy that value to the default_fov in beta5. Or if in beta4a you had cl_forcedefaultfov 1, do the same in beta5.
