Cancelling Window Update

Hi all.

Windows update is downloading one absolutely whopping file at the moment, and I would rather like it to not be. I suspect it is downloading SP2 (I use xp home) over my tiny wee modem, and since (a) I do not want sp2 yet and (b) I have a nice shiny CD with it on courtesy of PC Gamer and © It's fluffing up my online gaming by making me laggy as can be, I was wondering if anybody could tell me how on earth I convince it to stop doing what it's doing. Left and right-clicking on the systray icon do nothing - any other suggestions?

    k this is going out on a limb since i run w2k in stead of wxp <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ... Anyway:

    got to start --> settings --> control panel --> automatic updates.

    In this screen just uncheck the 'keep my pc up to date' checkbox. That should do it.

    IF you have a broadband connection, it is perfect to keep your cheese-with-holes Windows up to date

    Giving Microsoft carte blanche to put random stuff on my PC that could well break it is a bad idea. XP2 has already been shown to break PCs. Yes, Microsoft's stuff is full of holes, but the cure is worse than the disease.

    A good firewall, decent browser/mail app and some user education prevent the outside exploitation of most security flaws. I used Win2k, IE and OE on a broadband connection over 3 years and got 1 piece of malware (Blaster).

    You definately don't want it to install every patch MS releases. If it's a patch for an exploit that requires you to be a dipstick (running code all on your own, etc.), and you're the only one who uses the computer, then you're better off skipping it. Same goes for patching programs you don't use, like Windows Media Player.

    OK: It's an annoying resource drain running in the background that for me popped up at the worst times. Manual is fine by me!
