Baldur's Gate 2 Crashes

Woo.
So, I recently started playing Baldur's Gate 2 over again, since it's a great game and all. Just there is this one (more or less) simple problem:
The game keeps crashing at (more or less) random times. It wouldn't be as bad if it was just the game crashing, but no, it takes my entire computer with it. Not a whole lot of fun to play, and suddenly see your screen turn black as if you had pressed your reset key.
Also, which seems very odd to me, there is a pattern in the crashes, but a rather weird one:
It crashes at certain locations only. While I can run around on the Atkatla graveyard, Tradesmeet, the de'Arnise Stronghold or Druid Grove indefeninitely without having any problems whatsoever, if I enter Waukeen's Promenade, the Temple/Government/Bridge District, I have to quicksave every 10 seconds or so, in order to get my stuff done as quickly as possible (after the crash).

Oh, one more thing:
Even though my machine should be able to run this game flawlessly, it starts to run chunky when there is alot of magical action going on, f.e. when I cast multiple (graphic "intense") charms, like the fire shields or protect from evil. I think this is rather odd and is somehow connected to my other problems.

My machine:

MSI K7N2-Delta (nforce 2)
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
ATi RadeOn 9700Pro (newest catalyst)
1024 MB 2700 RAM
Windows XP Prof. w/ ServicePack 1
DirectX 9

The game is also up to date, as I downloaded the newest patch from the BlackIsle site. It mentioned something about crash problems with ATi cards fixed, but it still crashes.

Oh, and the game runs great on my brother's computer, who has an ATI card (RadeOn 9000) as well.

So.... HELP!

I would first try to downgrade you catalyst driver. Next I would look at the Buldurs gate 2 website for more infromation. Those sites normally have all the fixes you could want on them.

Make sure it's patched, don't use any of the experimental resolutions higher than 800x600. It's nice to be able to have more on the screen, but I've never seen it run stably at higher than 8x6.

Maybe try a reinstall of the game. Might help, also dfrag and clean up your hard drive and scan it for bad sectors.

I've tried both 1024*768 and 800*600, it doesn't make any difference. Also, the game is patched fully to the newest version that I could fine on the BioWare site.
I formatted yesterday, installed only the neccessary stuff (Service Pack 1, Catalyst, motherboard drivers, sound drivers, DirectX). Well, I loaded the game (saved at Waukeen's promenade), and it took about 2 seconds until the screen turned black.

My bet is that the catalyst might be the problem here, but if I get an older version, which one ? o_0

I never had a problem playing bg2 on 3.6s, and they're good for ns as well.

Tried Catalyst 3.6, it seems to make it worse. Any other ideas, anyone ?

This isn't much help, but uh, stay out of the crashy areas?

You can't, they are key locations.

After some research in the BioWare forums I found my problem and fixed it. Thanks anyways.
