Recently, after playing fallout 2 and enjoying it greatly, I tried to play fallout 1 off a cd on loan from a friend. The cd is scratched or has any sign of damage so I dont think thats the problem. Basicly what happens is that it installs fine, the movies play fine, but there are lines going up the screen durning character creation (like when you see a computer on tv). Even worse is in the actual game, whenever you move the screen blacks out, but you can "reveal" things by mouseing over them or going to another screen. This makes the game quite unplayable.

Im using Windows XP Pro, A64 3400+, and a x800 pro. I've tried it both with service pack 2 installed, and with no service pack installed.

    Funny, in my experience it's Fallout 2 that hates XP. Anyways, try setting the compatibility mode of fallout.exe to win95.

    Try running the entire CD under Win95 compatability.

    1) Put the CD in your drive. Close any window that pops up.
    2) Go to Start > programs > accesories > Compatability wizard
    3) Run the wizard and test all settings.

    I too have a slight problem with Fallout, when using your science skill on stuff it freezes the game, but otherwise it works fine. Just try different compatability settings (I uninstalled it yesterday, so I'm not sure what mine were set at). Try win95 and 98 settings and maybe disabling visual themes.

    I'm not sure if there's anything else to do.

    I'm not using XP (2000), but from my experience, this occurs if you have something running in the back. Like if my AIM buddy alert pops up and the computer is in the middle of combat, it won't minimize the game, but rather cause that effect for the duration of AI's turn. Wherever I point my mouse, it'll go either black or something similar...

    Not much help, I know.

    Windows XP is based on the NT platform and doesnt use DOS as the framework. Old games dont work well or at all on XP because the files that are called do not exist. Use a DOS emulator to run them.

    Underdog, I had the exact problem as you. The thing thats causing this is that theres other programs that youre running thats taking focus away from fallout. All you have to do is find and stop this process. For me, this process was CloneCD, once I stopped it, Fallout worked perfectly.

    This actually reminds me of the Fallout demo I tried before buying the game. I wanted to play music in the background (since running around is kindof...quiet and boring by itself). When I played the music, the screen would be really slow to refresh.

    It would be black, and wherever I moved the mouse the picture would appear, but moving where the camera was pointing made the screen go black again and need to be refreshed with the mouse. Checking good ol' task manager, I saw it was using 99% of my resources (for some reason).

    However, I never had this problem with the actual game, so I'm not sure what that's about. It's probably having conflicts like others are saying. [was either MusicMatch or Winamp being the problem...was last year]


    Have you tried to start a game, even if it looks messed up? I think I remember lines being on my title screen and character creation but the game ran fine (except when using the Science skill).
