Ns Loads A Black Screen, Then Nothing

<div class="IPBDescription">Noo precious NS!</div> Well, everytime I try to run NS, there is a wall of black. I hit esc, the wall of black dissappears and I'm back to my desktop.

I think that this might be related to the fact that I got some wierd error "NS cannot run in the current video mode. It will now run in software mode instead." Now I know NS can't do this so I want to change it back to OpenGL, but I can't. I don't even know if it is set to software mode or not, I don't know what's going on <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've installed the newest drivers and still nothing.

Is there a way to set my video mode to OpenGL outside of the NS options screen? Is there another fix? Please try to help me.

I use a GeForce 4 MX 440 (Don't you say a word...)

I am using Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1 (5.1 - 2600) on Cable.
My computer is running 1-AMD , 1259MHz, 64KB (0% Load).
Running with 195/256MB (76.17%) of memory.

(I used the overdrive IRC personal statistics but now that won't work either... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Help me <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    You do have to run in OpenGL mode. Can you access your options menu? Can you open other steam games?

    Are you running any special drivers? (like the Omegas)

    These problems are different.

    Thread hijacking = bad.
    (Not to mention ludicriously huge sigs.)

    Black screen BEFORE game loads; Cant be a video / OpenGL thing, as you can load the options screen even if your card does not support OpenGl.
    I'd recommend a reinstall. Sounds like a dodgy installation.

    On the side, more memory is recommended. 256 is really the minimum for XP.

    williz, your question has bee answered (correctly,) by Dragon Mech. You will need a new video card to play NS. Sorry. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    (It must be really old not to have OpenGL anyway.)

    Edit:
    Hmm. After some googling, it seems the card is not really that old, however it does seem to be causing problems all over the place. It has DirectX9 issues, but that does not apply to NS.
    Still, it may be worth trying <a href='https://ranger.s3graphics.com/420drv/' target='_blank'>this DirectX-related fix</a> that someone mentions <a href='http://www.driverforum.com/graphics4/7113.html' target='_blank'>herel</a>

    In fact, there's loads of questions and answers relating to your card type there.
    (http://www.driverforum.com/graphics4/)

    I still stand by my "Get a new card" solution. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
