B5 Gave My System Cancer

Ok so here is my problem.

b5 is released. Oh was I happy! I go to download the torrent file, but something was wrong with my Opera browser. When I click the link to the torrent, it wants to save it as an exe. In my haste to get b5, I dont notice this, click ok and save it to my desktop.

So now I have ns_install_v3_b5.exe.exe on my desktop

The problem is, I absolutely cannot delete it. I cant move it. I cant rename it. It says the file is in use by another person or program. There is just this file on my desktop that does nothing, and I cant get rid of it.

The one thing I can do it make copies of it to different locations on my harddrive. But then I cant delete the copies either!

I have tried restarting my computer, even in safe mode I still cant delete it. I tried downloading it again, thinking something was wrong with the original download, but it just appends to the file. So this file keeps getting bigger, but I cant delete it!

Does anyone have ANY ideas what to do. And I better not get responses from idiots telling me to use "browser name here". <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    ehhh....torrent?

Check your BT client to see if it's still downloading the file. If you must, try disabling your BT client.

    At worst, it's a virus.

Thing is, when I downloaded it the first time, it saved as that exe. It wouldn't work with my BT client, thats when I realized the file extension. So I downloaded it again, but just saved it as a *.torrent file. That copy worked fine, got the ns install, deleted the torrent file. But I still cant get rid of that EXE. It was from the link that is on the official NS download page.

Virus scan comes up clean as well.

That sounds really weird now....did you check your Task Manager to see if the exe was running?

I've had a few instances where installers were invisible and had to be closed by the Task Manager manually....

But it's fishy as to why it's an EXE though....

    Nothing in task manager... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

When I run the EXE, it opens a DOS window, and gives me the error that is in the attached pic. I get a process called NTVDM.exe in the task manager. When I close that, the DOS window closes, but I still cannot delete the file.

    thats wierd...

are you running WinXP? if so, goto "Processes" in the task manager and see if anything suspicious is there.

Try running a DOS Prompt, navigate to the folder the file is saved in, and use the command "erase file", where file is the name of the file (with extension) that you want to delete.

I tried using the DOS del command - that didn't work. However, the erase command deleted the copy of the file on my desktop, but wont delete a different copy in another folder.

Also ran a check disk on the drive, nothing wrong.

Actually, there's a pretty simple solution. Open the Windows Explorer, go to the desktop, then open the task manager and end explorer.exe. (The shell, not Windows Explorer. Make sure you get the right one.) Leave the task manager open, delete the files, close Windows Explorer and then go to File> New Task and type "explorer".

The same process ought to be used when uninstalling and installing new versions of codecs.
