Rage against the university
Yea, so the roomie and I are sitting in our room Monday. Hes playin the CS2D I showed him, and I, naturally, am playing some NS for some stress relief until a music class. The phone rings. Its the dorm office calling to inform us that they will be doing some work in our room. Thinking that they are asking when we can have it done, I grab my band schedual. BUT NO-O-O! Apparently, they are calling to inform us we have to move out of our room now. Wow. Very thoughtful. Its not like we are actually attending classes while here at this university. No, we just live here. So we are forced to move not down the hall, but 14 f'ing stories down! Keep in mind I am a big computer user, and I need alot of equipment for gaming, drawing, scanning, map making, linux, music composing, etc. I alone ended up doing 10-12 trips moving my stuff.
Now, I wouldn't be complaining, but they just called and said move now, on a day that has classes. Had they givin us some heads up or something, I would have gladly done so. But no, they are inconsiderate ****.
Oh, and it gets even better! I missed one of the band classes because of it. And this was an important, especially since I am majoring in music!!!!
But wait, theres more! We both have a math class that is internet dependant. And guess whats not working? The high speed of course! First off, I must tell how **** this university is. You have to have some p.o.s. cord from them, which is a custom designed ethernet cord of some sort. This requires you showing that you have an anti-virus and give them your MAC address. They wanna track virus infections. Now, I have a machine that I use linux with, which was a **** trying to tell them that viruses + linux = fairytale. Sigh...
Anyways, after moving into this temp dorm, we both hook up to the network. Guess what! They havent activated the ports in our room. So we go down to the office and explain what is going on. They say it will be up in 2 days. Hmm, two days to either type some commands to activate the port, or (most likely) plug in the cables on their end. Well, last I checked, 2 days after Monday is... Wensday! Wow! Thats today! So the roomie went down and talked with them again (because I was ready to rip their heads off) and they said that all ports have been activated, but they will look into it and will have it up on Friday. Why does that day sound familiar? Oh yea, we move back in on Friday! GG dorm! I wonder if they do realize, we are students needing to do homework.
Anyone else have some college horror stories for this new semester yet?
Oh, I'm keepin track of this on my website blog. Check it out if your interested in these evil times.

I thought that they would schedule it that I would have at least 24 hours to move out of my room. But that turned out to be entirely too much work for them.
The morning I had to move I was stopped buy a guy outside the cafeteria where I had just enjoyed breakfast. He stops me and we have roughly the following conversation:
Him: " You're **** right?" (**** = my name)
Me: Yeah...
Him: You have to be out of your room in 45 minutes - you've got 4 girls coming to live in that suite.
Me: What?!
Him: Four people are going to be moving into your room in 45 minutes. You have to move. We tried getting ahold of you yesterday...
Me: Bull[Fecal Matter]! I haven't recieved a phone call, letter or email saying I could move. Hell, I've been trying to move out for the last three days.
Him: It doesn't matter - we need you out of your room in 45 minutes.
Me: F***! Alright I'll need the keys and a trolly to move my heavy things.
Him: Sure. (This is the only point he was helpful.)
Needless to say I set a world record for moving - expect it in the next version of Guinness. But I did it, and 45 minutes later I was in my fall room.
Then I got my new computer and all was right with the world.
[EDIT] Try establishing a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your machine - I've been having almost the exact same problem, and a VPN setup fixed it.
It was an interesting time in my life.
Thank god nobody tried to sell me anything that day (there was a fair-type thing going on to welcome new students). Chances are I would've snapped and killed them.
And no, I'm not kidding.
Don't let up.
If you truly feel put upon, file a lawsuit. Lawsuits are the language that universities understand.
You pick a number of meals/week and food points (money). Aside from the fact you pay $830 for the plan and only get about $600 (I even asked if I could not pay it...since it's so retarded), there's nowhere to use your meals this week. One food place is closed until classes start, and the other is closed for renovation. Considering a meal is at least worth $3.50 they're ripping me off about $35.
So, I have to buy my food (essentially twice...) and I get a gaming ping of 300+...woot, university...
