Metroid Prime 2 Impressions
<div class="IPBDescription">I've played it</div> If you did not like Metroid Prime, you will not like Metroid Prime 2 and can stop reading now.
Okay, now that that's over with, let me say that I haven't actually played the full version, just the demo that was shown at E3 and is now being distributed as part of a Gamecube bundle in a last-ditch attempt to actually sell Gamecubes. The demo does, however, let you try out the light and dark beams and get a feel for exploring in the Dark World.
All the controls are the same as the first game, at least in the demo (and I see no reason for them to change it). Scanning items functions a bit differently now, the entire item will glow and you can put the cursor over any part of it to scan. Unscanned items glow blue, and scanned items glow green. Some items glow red, I believe those are the ones which will affect the world in some way if scanned (i.e. switches, control panels), or perhaps they're just important items. I could be wrong.
The main feature I know a lot of people wonder about is the light/dark beam ammo, which I can safely say isn't going to be a big problem. You'll start out with a 50 shot capacity for both weapons, and pick up some kind of tanks along the way to increase that capacity much like missiles. Shooting items like crates in the light world or outcroppings of what looks like dark rock in the dark world will release ammo just like energy for your suit, with one shot from the light/dark beam giving you a significant amount of shots for the opposite beam (say around 4 average). Basically, as long as you fill up on occasion you should be fine.
The dark world is hella cool, in my opinion. There are certain permanent safe areas which will slowly recharge your shields so you never really have to worry about dying just from walking around, and other glowing orbs that designate temporary safe areas that must be activated by shooting them with the light beam. If a dark creature is caught in a shielded area, they'll be significantly injured.
All in all, though, it seriously feels like an expansion pack for Prime 1 in terms of control and graphics. Granted, in the demo you can't play with the Screw Attack or really do much of anything, but it's still fun. Dark Samus looks appropriately evil, as do the Ing (dark world inhabitants), and what little of the other enemies I saw made me confident that they aren't going to rehash the creatures from Prime 1.
Final verdict is what I've already mentioned: Buy it if you liked Prime 1, otherwise stay away.

The only problem I had with the original was that it had such a high emphasis on scanning, i mean it was a nice touch, but a bit overdone.
But at least it gave people doing speed runs more challenging goals to try.
