Marines & Lag Or Is It Something Else...

<div class="IPBDescription">not a good combo i think...</div> here's what i have noticed after years of analysing the game(you can define analysing as playing)...

----------LAG MAKES---------
-harder for marines to hit their target(this does not apply for turrets)
-extremly hard to hit fast flying aliens (skulk leep,lerk...)
-easier for any alien to kill a marine...

Conclusion, lag makes aliens overpowered to the simple fact that most the aliens use melee(short range) attacks, therefore, lag doens't matter a lot for aliens cause they will still hit their target and accualy, they'll hit their target more easily cause the lag makes the marine unaible to shoot his target...

---------HOW DOES THIS WORK----------
this works exactly as the >hitbox bug< even though the bug is not there, you see that you are aiming at your target, but accualy your not, your aiming behind your target...Spectators can see this very clearly, so when you see a marine shooting behind an alien, it's simply because the game is laging and it has nothing to do with that marine's aiming skillz...

The bug is not there because now, 90% of the servers have a reserved slot, so there's no way you can be in the last slot and of course, they don't use it...

-------MEANING-------
I'm not sure if it's lag that's doing this... but the game really sux when that happens specialy if it's combat and your a marine... PLUS the server had 45 ping and the players have a ping around 45... For example, i had 25 ping

so does any one know anything about this???

[tested this in many servers... it does not happen to all the players though]

    play elsewhere if your lagging

The HL netcode is extremely competent in giving a player with 500 ping an equal as possible playing experience as someone with 50 ping. Obviously you're still going to have the 50 pingers reacting faster, but that can't be avoided.

What I meant to say, constant non-fluctuating bad ping is not a hinderence to kill things in NS, especially with the lack of recoil in NS. Fast moving targets are hard for anyone to hit regardless of ping because the HL netcode has built-in interp, where the hitboxes lag a bit behind the player model even for those with 50 ping.

Meh, I'm on a 28k. I ping 500 or worse constantly. I've learned my lesson, and that is to not go marines. Ever. Either all of my targets will be constantly warping, or if they have closed the distance at all (Generally by warping up to me), my damage will not register in time to save myself. I play weekly on DSL, on the same servers, and it's basically a polar opposite. The experience probably is as equal as possible, but it just isn't enough for me. I recognize that it's my lag and not the game that cripples my marine game, and I deal with it, by playing aliens.

There is no movement prediction in Half Life by default (not much of any at least), the engine was designed more for shooters, not melee combat, this is why in 3.0 Max added movement prediction for aliens.

What about marines? There's no movement prediction for them, meaning, even if I do try my hardest to dodge the skulks bite, and even if I do dodge it on my screen, he may not see the same thing.

This means, you get things like this happening with a 20 ping difference. Ping gives more of an advantage in ns than any other game I have ever played, because you cannot know exactly where the other person is seeing you on their screen, unlike games like quake that report movement > shooting.

Also the fact that HL prediction wasn't designed for such fast moving objects and the default max and min rates are so low in the server config help to create this type of situation.

so are u guys saying that 1/2 of ppl that play ns lag.. that's why they don't hit their targets as marines.... cause really 1/2 players in a marine team are aiming behind the target...

i would say that if there was no lag whatsoever, marine would be very overpowered....

Hl is acually better then most games at dealing with lag... Death around corners is a good way of showing this... Though annoying it blances the playing feild...

Aliens also suffer from lag, IE lerks, leaping skulks, blinking fades... They cant change direction quickly enough to move through a marine base or narrow hallway if they are lagging badly...

I actually find the marine side much easier than playing as an alien with dial-up. You just have to use more prediction. Hitting a target with a fade or onos is very hard because the knockback is delayed, so I don't know where to aim next. But I do still agree that marines can suffer from lag in the ways that project_demon mentioned.

if you consider 56k redundent (and its going this way) why bother catering for it? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I mean <a href='http://www.guildwars.com' target='_blank'>guild wars</a> claims to cater for all connections, but it looks pretty clear to me where their audience lies <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
