Getting A New Computer

Would like some advice
My loan came in, so it's time for a new computer...

I don't need a new monitor or other accessories, just the box. Currently, I have an emachines T2042, with a geforce 2 MX 400 64mb PCI card, so I think I've suffered long enough

I'm looking for something that can run HL2 and Doom3. Doesn't need to be uber fast, just something decent.

I'd like to get the most out of the $1,000 budget (if it goes a smidge over, it's ok too). Obviously an x800 is way out of my range (that would eat up half the budget right there) and I have no idea what mobo/processor I should be looking for. I'd like an intel option and AMD option if possible, since people seem to be pretty torn as to which is better. Basically I'm all ears, this will be the first time I'm "building" one rather than buying off the shelf, so I want to learn

I'd say to wait a little bit for the x800 to come down in price o.o, then start making decisions.. o.o

He doesnt need to wait, a few months ago 9800 was the top of the line and has it's price considerable toned down. I'd buy an ATI 9800 pro which give consistent fps in anything and is able to handle all your needs..

For procesoring needs, either get an AMD 64 (if you are willing to pay that) or a nice sempron

Its pretty good and it has a r360 core(9800xt core) and a big heatsink. Also it has some games it comes with.
