...more Total War...ness.
IGN and Gamespy present the Rome: Total War demo, unfortunately for most people; only here at fileplanet. I'm pretty sure it's exclusive so it's not 'legal' for Fileshack and 3D gamers and stuff to have it yet, so you're probably stuck with Fileplanet.
<s>I'm still in the waiting in line phase and my ideas coming shortly.</s>
...that is, if the wasp in my room doesn't attack first [edit: I got him with a flyswatter once, but he seems to be limply flying around occasionally...].
Some useful information on what people think:
Demo Feedback thread in R:TW forum
IGN Demo description
The demo contains a tutorial battle where you control a set of archers, infantry and cavalry, and learn the basics of commanding them. There's also one historical battle between Hannibal and the Romans at Trebia River, which is a pretty nice looking battle (where my screenshot in a post below is from). Apparently a few people have modded it so you can play as the Romans instead, but I haven't seen where it is yet.
There's also a flash page included which gives you some better information of R:TW, if you haven't kept quite up to date.

Seconded, except replace the word "school" with "work" and "evil" with "banana's".
EDIT:

Weee! Stomping Elaphunt rampage time.
My only complaint is that the units speak english instead of their native languages (but I'm a bit of a nut for languages - and there might have been an option for that I missed).
Holding your mouse over the units pre-battle give you better in-depth stats than MTW and they're just cool. The game looks awesome in motion...see attached screenshot for elephant coolness .
lucky guys over at the history channel got this before everyone for there tv show
I had no idea what this was but dled it anyway...zoh-my-god.
I had the last of the Roman units retreating, and I'm not one to let ayone leave a battlefield alive if they're not my allies. I pulled ALL my cavalry units off, and rushed them. Intercepted them and tore through their ranks like a swift wind.
Of death.
I already own Shogun TW: and Medivial, Now I can go and conquer rome as well.
Yes!
Say hello to your new emperor

I'm downloading now, thanks to our resident commie. This is the only RTS I've really been excited about for a long time now, and I'm hoping it lives up to the greatness.
Same way that everybody else used to kill elephants. If you didn't have traps to lure thme into, you'd just grab a lot of spears and throw them at it. Elephants aren't invincible, you know
Well. Not those particular ones, but ive seen screenshots of elephants wearin what looked like scale mail.

BBC actualy, called Time Commanders.
Well it seems to run a lot better than the older ones and plays better too.

If I remember correctly, the drawback to war elephants was that they were stupid and easily frightened - they'd sometimes turn back and trample their master's army. Maybe it's like this in the game, too.
Oh - and the game's awesome. I can't wait.

He probably means The History Channel, actually. They used it, too.
Although they're probably related to the BBC somehow.
Great game though.
lol yea I saw that show last week.
It was on the Battle of Thermopylae in the episode I saw,
It was 7,000 Athenian greeks and 300 L33tz0r Spartans versus 250,000 invading Persians including 10,000 Elite perisan "Immortals" shock troops.
The greeks had to defend a pass to hold back the persian invasion force to try to give time for the city to be evacuated.
The 7,000 Athenians were eventually about to be overrun so they retreated and sent in the 300 Spartans lead by their king.
At one point the Persian general sent a messenger over saying something like "We will shoot so many arrows into the skies that it will blot out the sun."
The Spartans considered ranged weapons to be for cowards b/c the users didnt have to be in the real combat. And upon hearing that statment and knowing that they would all most likley die anyways he stated "Good, now we get to fight in the shade."

QUOTE

The Spartans put up the best resistance, and made their stand on a tiny hill. They made a circle facing outwards with enemies on all sides. When Leonidas the spartan king was killed some of the Spartans formed a small group, and fought their way to his body, picked it up, then fought their way back to the main group on the hill. The Persians seemed utterly unable to annihilate the Spartans. At last, the Spartans were killed by a hail of spears and arrows, the Persians fearing to close with these fearsome warriors.

The 300 Spartans all held their ground until every single one of them was surrounded and killed but not before totaly pwning the persian army and taking 10,000 of their enemy to the afterlife with them.
Ahh nothing says we are going to "Pwn you like none other before we die" better than that.
Extremely. Watching armoured elephants plough through formations with ease is extremely fun, even if the troops are your own, and there's no puss-y-footing about; you get stuck in straight away.
