Port Opening

With service pack 2 windows automaticly blocks every port (or so it seems) then asks you if you would like to unblock ports for specific programs. This is a cool feture, but I was wondering for certain programs that have a range or ports that can be over 100, does adding that program to the exeception list mean it will let the program use any of those ports or just its primary one. I really dont want to have to enter 100+ execptions into the port manager.

    no idea

but here are the 2 ways fire walls work for stuff like this:
    1) Allow certain program to use what ever ports they want

    2) Just open up certain ports (and this can be done in a range, so 50000-50100)

    its windows

just folow the directions (I am sure there is a friken wizard for it)

just start it up and fiddle, the worst you can do is open a port that you shouldn't have. Then agian, before this you had ALL your ports open (I assume you don't run a firewall, and you are not ussing a router?).

It only lets you add ports 1 by 1, I want to give it a range like 6881-6999, but it yells at me when I enter anything but a number

I turned that POS off. I'm using my hardware firewall in my router, it works and it's not a pain in the arse.

Well, my external cable modem suposedly has one, with the windows thing turned off, most of the needed ports are blocked anyway. I have no idea how to chage ports on that though.

If you'd rather open a single port than a whole range of ports and you think there's a chance that the application you want uses DirectPlay for its connection features, you might want to have a look at DXPort. It basically reduces the range of ports that DirectPlay games try to use down to the range you specify (as narrow a range as a single port, if you like).

It doesnt use direct play. Windows doesnt have the option to open a range of ports?

I know, I've seen that, but I'm asking how I can close a range or ports like 6800-6999, you can only enter 1 at a time there.
