Ping Jump Problem

Hello, I've been playin NS for a few months and I've noticed a problem... when I play in games that are under say 10 people, my ping is 45... when it gets to 11-14 my ping jumps to 100... and when it gets to 15-20 my ping jumps to 300-800..
Now I don't understand why this is happening at all... I have a cablemodem through a router, and I doubt that would cause the problem... My computer is 2.4 gHz Radeon 9800 with 1 GB RAM... I doubt that this would be the problem... When I play I'm also on vent, trillian and mirc (clan stuff), but I doubt thats the problem because my clanmates who are doing the same don't have the problem...
Does any1 know how to fix this?

BTW heres other things with the computer:
- Windows XP
- running game in DirectX 9.1, 1024x768
- Not running EAX
- Using Steam
- NS 3.0 beta 4a
