My Mx440 Is Better Than My 9800 Pro >_<

sk84zer0sk84zer0 Join Date: 2003-06-18 Member: 17478Members
I recently bought a 9800 pro from newegg.com so I could play all the latest games (doom3, hl2, css, etc.) Once I got it installed and got the latest drivers I opened doom3 to find out I get 20 fps with the lowest settings and all those cool tweaks. So I decided to join an ns game to realize I got a little better fps than my mx440 (around 90 fps) and yes I tryed those commands like ati_npatch 0 or whatever.

So yea I wasted 230 bucks for a card that is equal in performance as a 30 dollar card? gg =\

Motherboard: KM266-8235 (yes I got the latest drivers)
Processor: 2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
The card I bought: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-281&depa=0' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-102-281&depa=0</a>

I am currently using the beta catalyst drivers (yes I have tryed the non beta cata drivers)

Here are some pics of what all my options or whatever are:

Sure the athlon is 2 ghz and not a 2000+?

I had the same problem when I got my 9800 pro, I had had a FX 5200 before, the 5200 seemed better. It was my processer, a 1.2 ghz athlon. Upgraded to a 2800+, works fine.

You need a good system to match a good video card, such is life.

The processor wouldnt matter that much. My doom3 works on 800x600 Low with AMD Athlon XP 1700+, GForce 4 MX420 64mb. And i get around 20FPS inside, 60 when looking wall and 1-5 outside. The card is bad on me i know. But anyways, back to the topic.

Hmm, i dont understand whats causing this problem, my friend has 9800 too, XT tho and he can run the game great, 1600x1200 Ultra. How much you have memory? That just plainly sucks :/.

    Nice background there btw <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

im guessing driver issues, delete all old drivers and try again, i had a similar problem and ended up reformatting my computer because of crap build up and that problem and it fixed it right quick.

Who's the lass in the pics?

You tried running 3d mark on your pc, see what happens. Maybe even sysmark(or whatever its called) to test your processor. If i remember rightly 3dMark does some CPU tests, could help see where your failing

My 9800 pro instantly worked golden right after I ripped my 5200FX out of my machine. My only guesses are possible driver issues, or a defective card. Your old card is definately not better than your new card, it just was working closer to right.

make sure your old drivers are completely gone (formatting is the best way).

There are no results, wrong link?
I bett it is a driver issue, format your hard drive, download and install the newest drivers (not installing form cd and then upgrading).

If this does not work come back here and report.

Those are pretty good results for 3dmark03 I beleive....Try using 3dmark2001 SE. It's way better.

You should have gotten the MSI 9800 pro... it has a xt core in it and it has a huge heatsink in it and its one of the cheapest 9800 pros out there.

And why does it say that it only has 4x agp for a 9800 pro???
Is that because your mobo can't take a 8x?

I don't like omega drivers because the author of it turns off some qualitiy options to make it look like the drivers are the best and he doesn't tell you either.

That fact alone took off at least 25% of the 9800's power.....

Make sure you have all AA and AF off.

I play NS with 4x AA and 16AF or thereabouts. My brother was playing doom3 on low@640x480 cause he didnt know to take that stuff off.

    Also not Doom3 uses openGL rather than DX <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have this exact same problem..... Had a mx440 exchanged it for a 9800 pro128, and it seems the mx440 has better preformance. I have agp x4 aswell. I get around 60-80 fps in NS (Which I expect way more from this card). Also Doom 3 is horible to run (not sure if this is ram related because of my 256MBS of ram)

    My specs are:
AMD athlon 2200 (runs at 1.8 overclocked)
    256MBS of ram
    9800 Pro 128

Also i just did a format do it can't be driver related. (can it?)

Please I would appreciate any help I can get as this is very annoying as I just spent all my money on this card <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, you could do with atleast another 256mb chip, but preferably a 512.
Although if it's not ddr then you have one fat bottle kneck in your system, get it fixed and the speed should really rise
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
I'd wager a guess that the ATI drivers (or at least the most recent ones) are sucking up alot more ram in use than your old card's drivers, if you upgrade to 512 and still have the problem, benchmark your cards and check out the results, its possible that you just happen to have the rare elusive, acctually defective card.

I know this is an old thread that has been revived and the original poster probably wont read this, but agp 4x or 8x really makes no difference at all for a 9800 pro, I doubt even a x800 has much to gain from agp 8x but I haven't seen any tests done on it.

Well I know putting the 9600 in this PC made a small difference but there was still showdown.

However a 9800 Pro alongside 1GB RAM, and a 3.2 P4 really does make Doom 3 run well (No Tweaking, Medium Graphics, 800x600, no slowdown all on Cat 4.6) On the _PC I brought yesterday. Now all I need is to buy a 7.1 Surround system.
