The changes can be effected by directly adding colors to the default grayscale sprite (640hud7.spr). Just keep in mind that blue is 'added' onto the Ammo icons when they are displayed. So if you color the sprites red, they will show up as purple in-game. Adjust accordingly.
The minimap can be colored any way you like, as long as you adhere to the fundamental rules of HL sprites (256 colors maximum, properly configured palette, maximum 256x256 pixels, etc.)
