Doom3 Fun Factor ?

I just grabbed my doom3 copy the other day, i get 40-60 fps with my radeon9800pro, it runs smooth, but...

I thought i'd like it since i like Resident Evil and such scaring games, i just feel its not fun playing it.. I find myself hitting that poor Turkey forever in that ingame-minigame, instead of actually continuing my saved game..
I saw most people were really satisfied with the game..

Maybe i was just expecting for 'the next generation game'...
Anyway, i wanted to ask if anyone feels the same, as in its just not fun ?

I haven't played it [but i will soon!], but undoubtedly many others feel the same way. It's far from unusual to be dissatisfied with a game. All the hype probably doesn't help either.

Actually I find Doom 3 like Serious Sam, with the following differences:

    Doom 3 is

    -Claustrofobic compared to SS
    -Creepiër than SS
-Much more detailed than SS (duh)

Doom 3 is pretty fun after all, lets hope HL2 is worth the hype.

Creepy it really is. Can get quite annoying sometimes. Nonetheless, its still fun.

In good old PC Gamer UK style:

    Doom3 is:
    Creepy
    Fun
    Gorgeous

    Doom 3 isn't:
    Perfect
    Frag-filled
To be played with the lights off

I give it 5/10 gameplay wise. Overhyped

If your not past the turkey puncher games, then ya it wont be much fun.

I had low, and I mean low expectations for D3 (heads on spider legs?), but was positively surprised by it being a nice, well rounded, though a little repetitive, straight horror shooter in the tradition of Undying. I guess it's really all about the attitude you approach it with.

I liked the repetative shooting action... over and over, but it was hella fun. And that's all I'm gonna say because I'm tired of psuedo-realistic games.

I myself had high expectations of it coming in, for it to be the scariest game I've ever played.

    It succeeded.

Yeah me too, except I found it boring and not scary at all. So my expectations were somehow right.

There wasn't much variety in gameplay, the most unique sections were the ones where you had to follow either a robot or that scientist. And what was up with all the NPCs wanting to sit around? If I had demons popping up all around me the last thing I would do is worry about finishing my work.

It was good, but it didn't have any "Whoa" moments* for me. And for a game of its calibur, it really should have.

*Whoa moment != Scary moment. I mean "Whoa" as in seeing 100's of your fellow comrads storming Stalingrad in CoD, or.... well thats the only one that comes to me right now, damn my bad long-term memory!

So you havent played System Shock 2?

But i found it better than I expected, best way to describe it is a great game but not something special.

If you want survival horror pick up System Shock 2, its even creepier and the music is increadably atmposhperic as is the voice acting. The character in SS2 also are plausable where as those in Doom 3 acted unrealisticly.

Same here, I went to Best Buy the day it was released to get Tales of Symponia, I saw Doom 3 and figured, hey.. I don't got a single game that my comp can't handle.. I think it's about time I get one. I was suprised that my Geforce 5200 gave me 40 FPS in closed areas and 15 in open areas with high ammounts of fighting. The gameplay was awesome, the little it has, I'm glad I picked it up, I can't wait to see what people come up with for mods. I'm just easily entertained I suppose. But I also didn't beat the game in one sitting, I played for 2-4 hours a night till I did, beat it on the sixth day I think it was worth my money for the experiance.

It looks pretty and has good physics, and I'm sort of a sucker for those things. But its bad sounds, PDA finding minigames (ARG), and lack of actual scary sequences balanced out, so I give it a 6/10. The thing that sends it above average is just how damned cool the new Pinkies are.

I myself wouldn't agree. I played System Shock 2, and found that while it was kind of fun, it was overly complicated RPG system for a too-stupid enemies. Basically you could get any upgrade, and still easily take the Run-N-Gun route. It had a few creepy parts, but DOOM 3 has just gotten me so much more.

    You're crazy.

Anyhow, I enjoyed Doom 3 a lot, as Tycho of Penny Arcade says it's like revisting a cherished old friend to find him spruced up and ready-to-rock. It is overly repetitive though, and certain gameplay avenues weren't explored, but it was still a great deal of fun, something to tide me over till HL2.

It really isn't that scary though, a few shocks here or there but overall nothing that hasn't been treaded in Silent Hill, System Shock 2 or films like Event Horizon and The Shining.

Sound QUALITY is nice, but the sounds themselves just don't break the mold. All the weapons sound incredibly weak, the zombies don't sound scary, etc. etc.

Good sound, IMO, can be found in Alien Swarm. That game scared me when I started playing it, Doom 3 didn't.

How about a SS2 mod in Doom 3 eh?

Once the AI gets an overhall for SS2 along with the grpahics its better than Doom 3.

Doom 3 was more jump out scary.

SS2 was im alone, no ammo, no memory and just genraly scary.

The D3 mod I'm most wanting is a recreation of the first Doom episode, with fancy graphics. If I had any mapping talent I'd do it myself.

How effing brilliant would a doom3 style original doom be?

I was thinking how lame and standard doom 3 was at first, but once I gave it more of a chance and played it how they intended, I started having more fun... alone, in the dark, with headphones on, and not saving all that often to disturb the flow and the fear... when I play it that way, it rawks a lot more...

still, it gets annoying how they introduce the weapons and enemies 1 by 1, and few of the enemies can't be killed by 2 shotgun blasts... and most of the game is just blasting away at the same enemies in different corridors...

I haven't played DOOM 3 yet but plan on ot, but however i feel Doom 3 won't beat HL2, except maybe in graphics. Half-life has so many mods, Doom is to old to mod really. Call me legit HL fan boy #1 ahhhh.

Meh, its definately a game worth playing, so compared to all the crap out there I have to give it at least an 8/10. Your points are way off though, DOOM 3 has one of the buggiest physics engines I have ever seen. If you can't find PDA's your hopeless, as they leave them out in the open, in area's that the game practically forces you to go to, and the soundscape is absolutly increadible (although I agree that some sounds are weak).

Personally I find this one of the scariest games I have ever played, although I am getting used to flailing the mouse around behind myself at the onset of the slightest sound (anyone else knowtice that they always spawn an enemy right behind you?) and getting good at using the fire barrels to your advantage decreases the freekyness factor that some of the normally strong baddies produce...

Resident Evil scarier then Doom 3? Hardly

I suppose everyone has their own tastes.

Doom 3 SP is the best SP FPS game ever to be released, MP on the other hand...
