Uh, hate to bust a bubble or two here, but how is a Doom 3 model being put into NS any different from say, a Pulse Rifle, Smartgun, Jin-Roh MG44 (or whatever it was) etc.? Why would Doom3 models be special? If you were going to close everything for copyright infringement, you'd have to close about 80% of customization since a lot of weapons are hackjobs, etc.

Cars are considered a mobile crime scene in the eyes of the law and a flight risk, and that's perfectly within rights, which is why cops don't need a warrent to search your car.

And I think the fact that NS has never cared about 3rd party models based on other company's intellectual property in the past, there is absolutely no reason to give Doom 3 special treatment. Full steam ahead, I say!
Unless you care to give one reason why this this should be allowed but an Imp shouldn't? I've never seen you complain in the past about this, why start now?
Oh yes the Avp2 models, nobody was steaming about Copyrights then..Heck someone is even releasing re-skins of them every while and then, heck Armslab even hosts one.
hmmmm, i think its a good idea for a pack, and there are MANY copyright issues wih doing it,but as with AVP2 they have basically the same message as doom3 when you first install it, so i mean if they look the other way for AVP why the hell not for Doom3
P.S.i think personally, that animated right, the Hell knight could make a freaking AWESOME onos(animated right meaning on both feet not like hes playing horsey with the damn marines)i mean fade allready has most the onos animations and there is allready a like devil fade or whatever for Onos, just scale it up and do a little editing of the animations.

I'm sorry but I've gotta go with Sheena on this.
A lot of companies are getting reeeal sue happy right now, and the only reason a Halo pack would probably be okay is because Bungie hasn't shown any signs. I see your point their EEK, but its a matter of risk. iD is just the kind of company to go "Oh, hi. Bubye." at something just to protect their rights, mostly because they got screwed in the past.
Isn't the copyright act supposed to protect companies from losing revenue and to protect thier material from being used to gain profit?
If this is the case then it should be fully ok for the conversions. If we were suing them to make a profit or to use them for personal gain then obviously we shouldn't be allowed. I personally think that just using it in another game is ok as long as it's not used to damage the property of ID or to cause any damage to thier profit intake.
In my opinion it's not an issue of copyright or other legalities (though that's a valid and strong argument). My main beef with conversions is an ethical one - would you want your hard work to be pulled out of its original context, slapped into a far inferior setting (ie from a fancy engine into an ancient one) and then spread around the internet - with or without crediting you?
If you want to see an imp in NS, make one. Done properly it will be better than a ripped one anyway, since ripped models will be set up to take advantage of shader features not present in HL.

In fact I would be flattered that my work is so appreciated and versatile it is ported to different contexts. i would like to be notified, however, but this is unlikely in our circumstance given the legal implications.
you are right, however, that the ported models will look less impressive in the HL engine, as the glistening shader effects will be lost
if someone (or team) does make a port over, it would be fantastic if they also changed the green infestations textures in the wads to look more like the doom3's growth of pulsating bloody flesh, or at least the blood splatter and stains

Let me ask a silly question.
Understanding that
1. Due to legal copywrite issues, it might potentialy be very bad for people to make DOOM 3 models.
2. The NS community obviously may not agree wholly with it HOWEVER they DO know of the issue as we can see from all the previous posts here.
3. There is a strong debate regarding the use of copywrited material
4. The NS Forums moderating team strongy looks down upon warez, and other realated copywrite infringment. (ex. One day autoban for anything remotely related to an illegal pre release for DOOM 3)
Well I guess I have to ask (which has been somewhat mentioned before)
If this much debate comes up over copywrited DOOM 3 material, then why hasnt this debate been so strong with Aliens, Predator, Starship Troopers, Jin Roh, Equilibrium, (and about a dozen other movies) etc. etc. etc.
And what do the mods think?
================================================== On another point Technically speaking, it might pose problems when people model a Colt 1911 or a Glock and then call it such with the firearms manufactorers emblem on it the model of in the file name.
Did anyone else notice for example how in all the 007 games for console, the game had real life weapons with BS names? B/c nintendo and Playstation game companys never had a licenced agreement with any of those weapons manufactors. ie: Heckler & Koch, Colt, FN, etc
and so real life guns such as the H&K Mp5K are now called simply the Deutsche <== German word for German, H&K is a german comapny.
The same can be said when Counter Strike went retail. Notice how all the weapon names suddenly changed from their real names to fake ones?
The same principles also dictate what the model looks like. example. Need4Speed games. The game company is not allowed to model/show extreme amouts of damage to the cars (a cracked windshield or light is about it) in game b/c they have made legal agreements for the game to use the real names of the cars, and the real companies marketing division thinks that a crashed porsche in game will somehow influence peoples opinions of its safety in real life or something.
However for this last interesting point the ns community seems to get around this b/c the models are not for retail purposes I guess.

gd.... who cares? Doom3 models aren't that great! They are lower poly than most of the custom models you find around here, and they are lower detail! The thing that makes them look nice is the engine, and without it the model = sucks... besides isn't original concept better? just let it go already...

If this is the case then it should be fully ok for the conversions. If we were suing them to make a profit or to use them for personal gain then obviously we shouldn't be allowed. I personally think that just using it in another game is ok as long as it's not used to damage the property of ID or to cause any damage to thier profit intake.
If you want to see an imp in NS, make one. Done properly it will be better than a ripped one anyway, since ripped models will be set up to take advantage of shader features not present in HL.

as long as credit is given where credit is due, i would not mind my work being sought after for other venues, as long as it is skillfully done and not commercially exploited.
4. The NS Forums moderating team strongy looks down upon warez, and other
realated copywrite infringment.

On another point
Technically speaking, it might pose problems when people model a Colt 1911 or a Glock and then call it such with the firearms manufactorers emblem on it the model of in the file name.
Did anyone else notice for example how in all the 007 games for console, the game had real life weapons with BS names? B/c nintendo and Playstation game companys never had a licenced agreement with any of those weapons manufactors. ie: Heckler & Koch, Colt, FN, etc
and so real life guns such as the H&K Mp5K are now called simply
the Deutsche <== German word for German, H&K is a german comapny.
However for this last interesting point the ns community seems to get around this b/c the models are not for retail purposes I guess.
you really dont get it?
what about us?
what about our board?
what about our game?
i really dont care about id software or any other company
do you really want to risk all that because someone else really wants to release potential lawsuit happy material ? i bet its also not very good for flayras team and his company, for the case he would need one day a puplisher for his finished version of ns...
in the case of a court order flayra have to shut down this place.thats very good for the image.
why are some peoples so smallminded, and cant think a little bit farther. yeah.. im ripping sometimes stuff too(from my original copys), but i wont release them, even when they are pretty nice lookin.
i have no problem with peoples ripping from their legitimate copy of doom3 for themself, and use them for their game. but why are some peoples releasing this source material on our board ? releasing it to peoples who are potential not owning a copy of doom3?
if the phrase "potential not owning" comes into the game it would be better not releasing that kind of stuff...
i think it would be ok if you are able to do a installer for the model with a doom3 cd checker
decompiling, ripping and extracting material ,code analysis of software falls under back engineering and is forbidden for non educational reasons.
when you could get a ok from ID software, that would be cool, but i dont think not the "ID staff" themself are able to give you permission.. ( i dunno if they would, but im sure they really cant) i dont think their marketing department and legal department would be happy about such a request (like extracting models and sounds from their product, and releasing them.)
if you really cant resist to release this models , share them privatly, on irc or somewhere else..

it's like she was saying, what i was thinking... it's insane, but very very true, ripping it off is lamage incarnate, and even if you do do it, and then put it on the forums, it's not you who's gonna come off bad, it's the whole NS community, if ID were to get wind of it, they'd probably try and shut this whole thing down and rape it's money for all it's worth. It's best just to play it safe and not touch on the subject again.
There was a very strong argument about AvP2 rips. The others haven't had the same attention because they are not models that are ripped directly from other games.
