What he said, but I'm 17. At the moment I'm pondering exercising more just so I bulk up a bit. A few years or so ago I got decent abs from about a week or two of coughing fits when I had a cold. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
exercise hard. every day, twice a day (i suggest before lunch and before dinner), do this routine, if you're up to it. if at any step you can't do that many before complete failure (complete failure means you give 100% effort and collapse/fall. it does not mean you give up), set that as your maximum and work up from that number. if at any step you can do MORE, increase and work to complete failure and then use that number as your routine number.

    1. do 200 sidestraddle hops (jumping jacks)
    2. stretch your calves, quads, hamstrings, back, stomach, arms, and hips.
    3. 30 pushups (or your maximum)
    4. as many crunches as you can do in two minutes
    5. 30 pushups (or your maximum)
    6. as many squats as you can do in two minutes
    7. jog a distance that is a good distance for you. if you're out of shape, the minimum you should do is three quarters of a mile. if you have to stop, brisk walk and then pick up the distance that you had left to jog without counting the walking.

after you do this, eat a LOT. eat LOTS of protein. drink a supplement shake if you want. eat good and hard. if you don't have protein food on hand, eat a peanut butter sandwich with this meal. you guys both say you eat a lot, you can eat a peanut butter sandwich next to your normal meal. <b>DRINK PLENTY OF WATER BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER EXERCISE, AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY.</b>

what this will do is let your muscles soak up and thus bulk up faster.. the thing is, the muscle you'll gain from hard, everyday EFFORT workout (and not just lifting or something in your spare time) will be harder, denser, and heavier muscle. this is the kind of meat that sticks with you longer, that works harder and better. everyday exercise = better exercise.

    good luck.

First of all, DON'T try to gain weight by eating more. That will be even worse than being underweight.

What you should do is this:
Exercise more. Go for walks. Walk for hours every day. Don't jog or run, that puts a strain on your ankles and weakens them. Just walk. Go at a slow pace and enjoy the scenery. Also, ride a bicycle. Ride it between cities, or around town. Use it instead of a car to get places. Or just walk to the places. You have to build up some muscle. You can try weightlifting, if you want, but be very careful. It's very easy to strain your muscles and cause negative effects. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Thanks CForrester and Zig for all the helpful hints.

Un fortunatley.. the closest city to me if 700km away. So I guess riding between cities it out of the picture, eh?

You could try following along a road or a trail that heads towards the next city until you get tired, then rest a bit, drink some water, look at the trees... Then ride home, once you're up to it. Maybe bring a book to read while you rest.

That is absolutely amazing. I hope he gets in good shape! He deserves it after enduring that.

A note to anyone with weight problems: It's not hard to lose weight at all! You don't need a special diet where you don't eat a certain type of food, or you spend hours counting calories.

The secret to weight loss is eating /healthy/ foods. Avoid processed foods, like anything in a can or a tin. Whenever possible, always buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Don't eat before going to sleep, and learn how to combine the right foods. (If you need some help with this, contact me. I'll help you out.)

And drink <b>a lot of water</b>! At <i>least</i> a gallon (four litres) a day, preferrably more. Your body needs water to function, and the more of it, the better. By having a lot of water, your body will be able to function better, remove toxins and cool your body. This means no/minor sweating in the heat, because you don't need to sweat to cool your body and remove toxins. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Two ways to find out if you're properly hydrated: If your lips appear cracked and dry, you're dehydrated. Drink more water. If your urine is any colour but clear, you're dehydrated. More water. (Urine is NOT supposed to be yellow, if you're properly hydrated!)

A few more tips, too... Cut back on soft drinks. The sugar and artificial products in it are bad for your body. Avoid sugar water like Coke, root beer or Mountain Dew, etc... Try to limit yourself to water and juice, whenever possible. Tea is good for you every once in a while, but make sure that you drink as much water as you can before you drink any tea. (Tea hinders water absorbtion. This is bad.)

Try to limit your caffeine intake. The caffeine in chocolate, tea and coffee is okay, but keep it at a low level. (One or two cups a day for tea and coffee.) You'll find yourself getting much more energy from a glass of orange juice than from a can of soda.

I'd like to reemphasize the food bit: <b>Whenever possible</b>, but FRESH fruit and vegetables! (If fresh fruit and veggies aren't available to you, go for frozen. Fresh > Frozen > Canned. Canned veggies have next to NO nutrition in them.) Avoid bleaches and artificial colourings. (No bleached flour, no bleached bread. If you want to go the extra mile, make your OWN bread! I've got a recipe for that, if you want it.)

If you REALLY want to feel good and be healthy, you can go on a raw diet. As in... You eat completely raw food. This is incredibly difficult in the US and Canada, because almost no food is raw. The FDA hates raw. You can also grow your own vegetables. If you're interested in a raw food diet, contact me and I'll ask my friend about it. (She knows a lot about raw food diets.)

Also, put your pets on a good diet, too! Raw meat and veggies are good. If you are looking for information on a raw diet for your pets, search Google for "<animal> BARF diet". ("cat BARF diet", for example.) Make sure you do your research, though. Find out what is best for your pet! <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

in a few months, i have to be able to do this in one workout. easy enough, you say. well consider i'm totally unfit. i'd be lucky to hit 6 on the shuttle run, i can do 20-25 pushups (crossed ankles, kuckling) no trouble, but sit-ups i'm lucky to hit 15 before total failure.

I'm also just like the other two, except 19. I can put on muscle tone pretty quick, but keeping it is harder than getting it. I have a metabolism like a rabid skulk. The fluctuations in my body weight during times of stress &/or excercise have my doctors giving me funny looks and mumblings things about broken scales and "further observation"

I'll have a shot at some of the advice given here, except cutting sugar intake. My high metabolism means i get a low blood sugar level very very quickly, especially when excercising or when under emotional/mental stress, and low blood sugar for me is EXTREMELY BAD. not so much the effects on my body, more the effects on my brain. my mood swings are extreme and sudden, but by keeping my sugar level up i can keep them relatively under control. (we're talking the difference between anxiety attacks & the life of the party)

As for diet, i'm very lucky because i live in a rural area, and my father has always been an avid gardener. we have our own vegetable garden, own meat and chickens (for eggs). we eat a fair amount of fresh fish (i can't eat fish if it isn't super-fresh, i get nauseous). the only problem is, i'm incurably lazy when there's no-one around to motivate me. I eat maybe 1 solid meal a day, mostly.

    Here's to trying to change that <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->STUART, Fla. -- A 480-pound Martin County woman has died after emergency workers tried to remove her from the couch where she had remained for about six years.

Gayle Laverne Grinds, 40, died Wednesday, after a failed six-hour effort to dislodge her from the couch in her home. Workers say the home was filthy, and Grinds was too large to get up from the couch to even use the bathroom.

Everyone going inside the home had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air.

A preliminary autopsy on the the four-foot, ten-inch woman lists the cause of death as "morbid obesity." But officials want to know more about the circumstances inside the home.

Investigators say Grinds lived with a man named Herman Thomas, who says he tried to take care of her the best he could. He has told them he tried repeatedly to get her up, but simply couldn't. No charges have been filed, but officials are looking into negligence issues.

Emergency workers had to remove some sliding glass doors and lift the couch, with Grinds still on it, to a trailer behind a pickup truck. Removing her from the couch would be too painful, since her body was grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin had literally become one with the sofa and had to be surgically removed.

She died at Martin Memorial Hospital South, still attached to the couch.
Neighbors say they had no idea Grinds lived at the duplex, though they had seen Thomas and some children outside.

I really wonder what her 'caretaker' did to help.

I feel bad about her death, but damn. The first time I couldn't get off the couch because I was too fat would have been the warning sign for me that maybe I should lay off the fritos.

Hell, if she couldn't get off the couch due to obesity, how the hell did she have access to food?

For that matter, should people suffering from depression just "cheer up?"

I mean, do you not think she looked in the mirror (reflection in TV screen) and hated every fibre of her being? You think she could've just flicked a switch in her head and shaped up? Can you imagine how much self-loathing was running through her, and in this thread we see replies like "Hah! That's what she gets!" In the last years of her life, she never breathed fresh air and spoke to only one person. And there is laughter in this thread.

The only way you can gain weight is by consuming more calories than you expend. If you do not consume as many calories as you expend, you WILL lose weight. Some people have bad thyroids and whatnot, but that does not magically break the fundamental rule: expend more calories than you consume, and you will lose weight.

Fat people are responsible for their own plight, and I feel little pity for them. It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort to become that fat.

Do realize that she was still a human being.

Its hard to figure out what was going on in her head though. Maybe just "perhaps I ought to get up. Meh, too lazy", rather than "im too fat, but I dont care. I want to sit here and eat and grow fatter.". Or perhaps "I like eating. Why shouldnt I do something I like?"(dangerous logic).

    Although the coffin was funny.
