next time make sure he does get his badge number.
Basic rule of dealing with cops that are doing something you seem as wrong:
1) cooperate! (if you don't THEN you are doing something illegal).
2) Politly ask for their badge number (if they refuse, then insist, they do legaly have to give this to you).
3) see 1
4) Ask if you can leave, if they say no ask if you are being charged with something.
5) see 1
when they do release you record all of the information.
With this you can fight against what they did.
cop\ Hello there sir. May I speak to {insert fathers name here}
dad\ WHAT THE ****, I DONT CARE WHO YOU ARE YOU SHOULDN'T BE CALLING THIS EARLY!
cop\ Sorry sir, but my name is Officer {Insert name here} and I'm here to inform you about your son's recent illeagle activities involving his motor vehicle last night.
dad\ What now, did he drive fast? Or Kill someone WHILE driving fast, or even kill someone while driving fast dui?
cop\ You are aware of the dangers of STREET RACING are you not sir? It is a very serious and dangerous activity that teenagers such as your son are participating in after the release of those two Fast and the Furious movies.
[SIDE NOTE- I WAS MODDING AND TUNING CARS WAY BEFORE THE FNF MOVIES WHICH IMO SUCKED, CARS WERE NICE....THATS ABOUT IT]
dad\ Really, I didn't know that a 2004 turbocharged nissan maxima had the ability to race, I thought it was a friendly family car with 1.5 inch H&R lowering springs, and full aluminum panel raplacements. I had NO clue!
cop\ Well, your son's motor vehicle did not meet
dad\ DONT PULL THAT **** ON ME! I MADE SURE IT WAS LEGAL AND HE DID TOO! HE EVEN GOT IT CHECKED OUT BY OFFICER KERRI!
\end of convo
\me waking up.
me\ what happened?
dad\ That cop called.
me\ ****.
dad\ dont worry too much.
me\ goes back to bed.
dad\ henry
me\ yea?
dad\ you owe me money, and when you wake up your painting the garage, and cleaning the gutters. I dont do this **** for free you know.
Buy him a present and tell him how much you appreciate:
a) The fact that he was 100% supportive.
B) The fact he isn't intimidated by the filth (a British euphemisim for the Police) and how glad you are that he was a marine, rather than some spineless civil servant.
I had the police try and pin a blatantly obvious case of self-defence on me as 1st Grevious Bodily Harm, later dropped to Actual Bodily Harm, further dropped to Aggravated Assault and by the time it came to court, reduced to a caution (better than risking a conviction by continuing to defend myself).
The police force attracts the kind of person who likes to feel like a big man. If people wanted to help society, they usually become teachers or nurses.
Thankfully, your father seems like he's had experience with dealing with this kind of self-important bully.
[Side note: My girlfriend was done for Drunk-in-Charge for sitting in her car whlist waiting for a taxi to arrive (it was mid-december and she worked at the place where she was waiting to be picked up from). That's legitimate, if highly unfair. What was inexcusable was that the PC who arrested her told her that if she orally pleasured him, he could make it go away.
Naturally, she told him to sod off and fought it in court. They upgraded it to Drunk Driving and banned her from driving for 6 months, necessitating her to walk 4 miles at night to and from her bar job and pick up a ?600 fine.]
buy, ow!
do you people not have public defenders?
First up we don't have a "Drunk-in-Charge" we only have DUI (driving under the influence) and open containers of booze are illegal.
but, cmon, how do you manage to go to a lesser offence (And a silly one to that) to DUI, when she wasn't mooving.... (and after the cop asked for a bribe!)
blech.
Honestly enugh, MOST cops are realy great people (officer Kerri sounds cool), and are there because they honestly like to hlep people (the scary thought is I keep on thinking of becoming a cop, then fortunatly decide to continue with the firefighter idea ).
Yah, most cops are cool, there are just a few idiots who need to be delt with apropriatly (As I said, make sure you get their badge number, and insist. As wel as knowing about wrongful detainment
If you are not being charged with anything they don't have a right to detain you for to FORCE you to go any where or to stay at one place for to long. This excludes things like you having to stay on location of a crime if oyu were a witness, but even there, they can't detain you for long.
thats scary becuase i think the same thing, becuase I sorta DONT want to be an ahole cop lol.
I asked them 3 times why they wanted to see inside it and all three times they refursed to answer. After 30mins in the station my uncle (who works at the station) took me home, not after going mental at the 2 officers involved
You can refuse a search in just about all cases, sans search warrant. And they can't pull you into the station for no reason either.
But I digress that has nothing to do with this particular incident.
Yeah what he did was wrong... Rabb, I can see why he THOUGHT you might have been racing, and I don't nessesarily blame him for pulling you over. However it was clear in this case that he already came to an improper conclusion about what you were doing and pre-judged you, which was wrong. This was a case where he was going to give you a hard time, and he decided that before he even stepped out of his car. He also demonstrated a lack of knowledge on what is and what is not illegal in car mods, and he SHOULD have known, recognizing the difference is part of his job.
I'm glad your father got it squared away. I'd talk to this officer kerri too, and ask him (her?) to suggest implementing a program or class to teach street officers what is ok and what is not. If something like that IS in place already, it is clearly insufficient.
Yeah, almost all cops are decent people. While it's nice that your dad was supportive, I don't think it was a good idea for him to be swearing at the cop over the phone...there was no need and it was pretty low class, considering that the cop was trying to be civilized over the phone and your dad was a marine.

Consider the time the police officer called, and the fact that it was NOT from the station, but from his personal domain. Doesn't that lead to like...him trying to stalk me? next thing you know he'll be watching me outside my house. btw burn, kerri is a chick.
Here is something to remember the next time you get pulled over.
You do not have to show him anything in your car that is not obvious from outside of the car. If you tell him no, then he must get a warrant to search your vehicle.
NEVER LET A COP SEARCH YOUR CAR W/O A WARRANT. I have been pulled for no reason before, and the cop asked to search my vehicle. I politely told him no and that if I am not under arrest or being cited for any violation I am leaving. (Cops like to pull you over to run your tags and see if you have any warrants out. It is illegal to do such a thing)
This includes his request to look under the hood. Unlawful search.
Be polite, and kindly inform him that you do not consent to a search of your vehicle.
If you really want to put him in a hard place, and are afraid that he is going to search anyway, just put the keys to your car on the roof of your vehicle, and inform him that you do not consent but the keys to the vehicle are available to the officer.
However, do not try to stop the police officer if they do intend to search your vehicle. Just stand to the side (or where they say) and wait. It will be on the dash cam of the cop car and you can later bring it to court.
Where do you people live? In my town the police take skateboards away from kids WALKING to the skatepark ("no boarding on the sidewalk" is his BS answer). In my town police pull into a gas station where you are talking with friends... then SEARCH YOU... SEARCH YOUR FRIENDS... SEARCH YOUR CAR for no reason whatso ever (of course any and all charges brought against me were dismissed because of the extreame violation of protocol). In my town the police are caught using "drugs" (marijuana) that were confiscated... fired... then rehired weeks later. In my town, Police stop by a few times a month at the high school and search every single locker, the cars in the parking lot, and sometimes even classrooms.
Dont say "blah blah blah BS excuse", because there IS no excuse. yea i dont have any charges on my record, and haven't had to pay fines... but the fact remains that my rights have been violated more then several times by the local law enforcement, and there aint a damn thing i could do about it at the time. Report them? I'd rather let them breed hatred... I am waiting for the 2nd american revolution, and the more people for the cause the better.
Hey... canada is just a few hours drive away... Now if only i could finish college and move out of this hell hole. BC HERE I COME!
What motivation, beyond being a paid bully, could anyone have to become a police officer?
People who want to help society do volunteer work or become a medic or a teacher or hell, even a crossing guard (the UK term is lollipop lady, but I can see all the US forumites going WTH? at that one). They don't strap on a gun belt, don a pair of aviators and pretend that they are Dirty Harry. That's a job for rampant tossers.
As a percentage, about 85% of the police I've interacted with through personal or work related reasons have either been bully boys, facists or bent (corrupt). That's a pretty high strike rate.
Edit: And I don't recommend you try standing up for your rights unless
a) You can afford very good legal representation
and/or
b) You know your rights to the letter.
My personal advice from being arrested?
Don't talk to anyone but your lawyer. If they suggest that you are incriminating yourself by not co-operating (that's right, in the UK we NO LONGER HAVE THE RIGHT TO SILENCE!!!) or say that if you help them you'll be out of there in an hour, don't be stupid enough to believe them.
You are dealing with people who are promoted and paid based on their ability to get convictions, not carry out justice. Politely inform them that you have been advised to wait for legal advice and then shut the hell up. In the UK, they are obliged to get you a brief within a few hours. Wait it out till then.
Not much better up here, bud...

Yeah that's a rather accurate percentage, considering how many police-beatings, false arrests, false detainments, and other things there are that happen every day.

No, that is not true. Since your vehicle is a mobile and will be gone as soon as the officer is, the officer only needs probable cause to search your vehicle. Additionally, there's also the clause of 'in plain sight' which means that if he sees something illegal just sitting in your car, he has the immediate right to search it as well as arrest you. The way the system works, a cop only has to have a reasonable idea that something illegal is on you or your car to perform a search if you get pulled over and you're not under arrest.

Always a smart idea.
Most of them are in it because they like helping people, and wih out cops, there would be alot more crime.....
yes, bad stuff goes down every so often, but remember, lots of good stuff goes down also, you just don't see it on the news.
I wont speak for Cops in the UK (as I have spent very little time there), but the amjority of cops I have intereacted with are good guys, friendly, nice etc etc.
Yes, some will hassle people, but on the other hand, I have had cops tell me what to do if I am ever hastled (know your rights, and DON'T resist, it is better to fight it in the court when you can say you were cooperative).
And yes, it does take a certain mentality to be a cop. I like helping people, but I realy REALY don't like hurting people (I am very nonviolent) thus why I am going into other forms of civil service instead of the police.
hehe, we need to get Davis in on this.

I chose this career path because I like to help people, I like the everchanging scenarios that I get to expirience. And Ive always felt really angry when I see innocent people get totaly screwed by criminals.
I live with 4 other officers myself. One of them is a marine just like your dad.
They and the many people I work with are some of the finest people Ive ever met.
They would go out of their way to help someone with out a second thought. The bond we share is probably something close to the military, as the police is a paramilitary agency anyways.
Its a great feeling to be able to know that if you were ever to need back up in a hurry, your buddys will be right with you ASAP all the way.
But hey you have to remember, police officers are the same as everyone else, human beings, just like everyone else in the world. There are some really great personalities out there, some mediocre ones, and some crappy ones too. In our city we actually get compliments and thank you notes from tourists, business owners and other people all the time. We do a lot of community policing efforts as well to work with and interact with the locals too.
Lots of people love us, lots of people hate us. and some dont like the police until they need them.
I cant really make a comment for or against your buddy and his car as Im only able to see half the story and I wasnt there myself. However it does seem like that officer was a bit over aggitated, and your friend does seem to be an ok guy, but hey I wasnt there and Ive never met the officer or your friend.
Id like to type a better response but Im actually working now too lol. Just on a quick break and someone told me about this thread.
Take care and watch out for those sneaky Cloaked Oni
Cpl.Davis
I was once pulled over for running a green light.
Time: 11:30
I pulled up to a cop car, the light was red. It turned green.
The cop car didn't move. 1 second. 2 seconds. I was like... weird... and I drove on.
3 seconds later the lights are flashing. He pulls me over and tells me I ran a red light.
I was also wearing headphones (stupid, I know) around my neck. He cited me on that too.
120 dollar ticket. I went home. I'm appealing this ticket because there's no way I'm gonna let this BS happen.
But really, that was so lame, what could I have done to avoid the ticket and the whole appealing process? It was my word against his at the hour, no one else was around, it was complete LIES
Police do not have ticket quotas.
In fact its illegal in the United States to have quotas for traffic stops, arrests, citations etc.

Perhaps, but you are also probably not from a township that has been sited 3 times in the last 2 years as using 'unethical' ticketing practices. Or one that generates a majority of its income from ticketing (the township not the police dept).
While the police dept may not have quotas, you would be amazed at how far they can be pushed by the local govnt into generating income.
I used to work for a security firm, and I worked closely with the police, I have seen the bottom of society (quite literally in the case of the naked guy carrying only a sixpack, who wandered into a place I was guarding. In addition, I have a friend who has been a police officer for years, and is a SWAT sniper now (my dad tought him how to shoot )
However, I have :
Been pulled over for no reason (when pressed for a reason the cop said he had none, since he was honest and admitted it rather than say my bumper was illegally aligned or other BS excuse, I did not report him to a supervisor)
Been asked to act as a witness for some of my friends who were pulled over for no reason and told that factory installed parts to their car were illegal.
Had friends who were mugged while the police watched.
My father (the one who taught the swat guy how to shoot) had been repeatedly beaten by police when he was younger (30 years ago, same police dept that harrassed me) Once by the direction of a judge who did not approve of him dating the judge's daughter.
Cpl. Davis, while I know you are an honorable individual and take your position very seriously. There are always bad apples, and when it comes to police officers one bad apple really stinks it up for all other officers. Unfortunately, in my area, there are a whole lot more bad or 'grey' apples than you generally encounter.
One of my biggest complaints about the police is when they issue trumped up citations or charges. They know that they won't hold up in court however they are trying to force a plea. Too often have I seen friends get eggregious citations only to show up in court and find out that if they plead guilty to some smaller offense, the larger offense will be tossed out. The alternative? risk losing to the larger inflated charge. People will often just take the smaller fine. What really burns me is that they shouldn't have been charged for anything in the first place.
I don't want to play the race card, but it seems odd my friend can get pulled over several times in the course of a month for 'illegal modifications' to his unmodified factory Buick.
That practice is so unethical but common in my area that I fume every time I see a police officer. It is a terrible shame that it has come to that but it only helps demonstrate that a few bad officers can make it really bad for the whole lot.
And unfortunatly, sometimes those bad ones end up in the same place (where you live forinstance)
I stick up for cops simply because so few people will. Generaly as soon as something bad happens, all cops get tared with the same brush, and I hate seeing that happen to any one (it is just another form of discrimination, and I hate that).
I admit that I have NEVER had a run in with cops, and that is probably atleast ot some extent because I am a white, middleclass, male. Idon't look suspicious. Even with that factored in, I still want to stick up for cops....

Thats done for a reason. B/c if the person commits a really bad crime (and ill give you a perfect example) we dont want that person released on personal recog. "promis to show up for court. or getting a small bond placed on them.
Just the other day 4 individuals did a strong armed robbery on a pizza delivery guy trying to do his job. They beat the crap out of the poor pizza guy.
We threw every charge we could on to the 4. We even had eye witnesses including one who video taped the guy getting beaten up.
If there is good probable cause or evidence too we charge the most serious of the charges. We dont charge people with things they didnt do.
But what happens is that many times people will commit a really bad crime or whatever and then later on, due to mitigating cirumstances (no prior record, defendent cooperated with police investigations, very lienent judge, or other technicallities) they will be "rewarded" with or simply recieve a lowered charge.
In many times at the arrest location its up to the officers discretion.
Example.
Just the other day some cocky drunk teenager for whatever reasons decided to assault some other people for no reason and then assault my roomate wo had responded to the call.
He was a real **** to everyone involved.
So he was charged with
Malicious destruction of property, <== ripped shirt of victim
Malicious destruction of property<== Kicked over some ones motorcycle
Malicious destruction of property<== Kicked in a car door
Public Urination<== **** on a lampost
Indecent Exposure<=== Obviously people saw the puplic urination
2nd degree assault<== on victim
2nd Degree assult on a peace officer<== My roomate who actualy made the arrest
Disorderly conduct in a public place<== for swearing the f word and other racial words out loud (very loud in fact) to near by people
Resisting Arrest<== Struggling with officers trying to place him under arrest
Another count of Malicious destruction of property for repeatedly kicking the police transport vans door and breaking it.
2nd degree assult for spitting on me when He got to station.
One more MDOP for spitting all over the windows etc inside the station.
Thats 12 charges.
Now theoritcally speaking we didnt absolutly HAVE TOO charge him for the extra assault on me (however spitting on someone never really goes over well anywhere and Im sure if someone told you to f off and spat right in your face you would want something done about it as well) as well as excluding the indecent exposure that went along with the public urination etc.
However when the court commissioner gets the officers statement of charges and probable cause statements which details everything he did, the defendent was given a bond (which wasnt that high but he coudlnt pay it anyways so he was transfered to the county jail until he could get bailed out or his trial date) instead of being released that night.
The states attorney will most likely drop/lower some of the charges because the defendent had no prior criminal record.
Charges are lowered/dropped all the time not becasue they are wrong but more b/c the court/ jail system is filled up enough or the defendent may really be a halfway decent guy, or thousands ot other circumstances both good or bad.
Even if we had charged him with the bare minimum of things even they might have been lowered/dropped and so then the final outcome is jsut pointless and unfair to the victems and society as well.
However on the night of the arrest we did not want that indivual to be released due to the drunken violent nature that he was in.
-Hope this helps

That wasn't exactly what I was referring to. Getting charged for commiting a crime is one thing, the problem I refer to is different.
Often a charge will be leveled against an individual that is nearly impossible to disprove, or fight in court. The court (or officer if they are really shady) will offer the deal of pleading to a lesser charge rather than risk fighting the false but hard to fight charge.
The police in my town do it all the time, often on the side of the road with the comments: "I could charge you with crime X, but if you just plead guilty to lesser charge B, I won't." when the individual shouldn't have been charged with anything.
Once you see something like that, it will take a lot for me to trust the police in my area again.
