---------------------
just minor thought

it would be cool to have NS for UT2004.
some people might say that UT is very different engine and gameplay wont fit NS, but take a look at Red Orchestra, its nothing like UT, but made on its engine.
Im not saying that you have to make NS for UT, just think about the possibilities.

I think NS on half-life 2 would be a better idea.

Use the search function ffs there have been like 10^100 posts on this

There are no plans to move NS to another engine , NS2 wil be on another engine tho

I think any topic regarding NS being converted to the source engine will be locked at lightning speeds

And why in the name of all that is holy would the team suddenly decide to change to the UT engine? How much effort do you think that would take? Maybe there are more possibilities, but is it worth the damage to the community, this Half Life based community?

What is more annoying, the newb that asks "Dud, wherz the bomb?" or the newb that asks "Aliens huh? To be honest, I'm not perfectly sure that the Source engine would be the best engine to put the next NS on. When Valve got together to discuss what they were going to do with Source (before it had that name), the most obvious thing to do was to start with the stuff that they would have liked to see in HL, but they couldn't or they had to limit it. Three biggies from that list were:
    1) Physics
    2) Vehicles
    3) Outdoor environments.

You may say, "HL did have all of those things!" Well, start with the physics: they had gravity. And that was about it. The vehicles that actually worked well in HL1 were only the trams that ran around black mesa. Now, the outdoor environments is another, completely different thing. The Q1/Q2 engine blend that was used was (and still is) not very good at rendering large areas without good visibility blocking. Think of the big dam at black mesa. Load up the map if you feel like it. Stand on top of the dam (after turning on god mode, or at least shooting down the chopper ) and look about you: the area is very curved. The dam is curved, the canyon is curved around, everything.

Now, with that in mind, let's investigate why. Find a map with a very large, open area with a texture that is repeated often, turn off your anisotropic filtering, and load the map. Say, cs_assault if you have Counter-strike installed. Notice how about 20 "feet" away from you, the texture rendering quality drops off of a cliff? That is why everything is curved: so you don't look at a straight canyon wall and see varying texture LODs (levels of detail) since the middle of the wall is closer than the ends.

And that, my friends, is why outdoor environments got so much attention in HL2. To be honest, I'm not perfectly sure that HL2 would work for the claustrophobic, twisted heaps of metal that NS takes place on. NS doesn't need vehicles, it doesn't need outdoor enviornments, and heck, I can't find a good way in my head to fit physics in with NS gameplay.

Sorry, that rant got very offtopic, very quickly. But rest assured, my point has been made.

Doom 3 anyone? The atmosphere is unbelieveable and the game itself is set on an overtaken marine colony on mars. Perfect for NS gameplay.
