Slowing Down Dos Games

Okay, so I suddenly remember an old DOS game that I played a lot, and found it on the internet (shareware license <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

It doesn't have any problems running in Windows XP, except for one. It runs <u>very</u> fast. And when I mean fast, I mean really really really fast.

Does anyone know how to slow it down?

(And if anyone is interested, said game is called Tank Wars)

    <a href='http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>DOSBox</a> might be what you want. A DOS emulator.

    EDIT : This is weird...I'll send it through PM o_O
    Surprising since it was never shipped in a box and is stuck on a shareware license o_O
    At least I remember my demo disc didn't come in a box. Was a freely given Demo Disc way back then....

    <3 Tank Wars. I remember Mr. Stupid <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    EDIT : Mr. Stupid is the name of one of the AI XD

    For those of you who hate DOSBox (maybe you have a weird disease or something) you could always just open multiple instances of it until it slows down.

    I think VDMSound has some options for slowing it down.

    Yaah, and with y-axis mouselook. Without which playing a 3d-shooter just doesn't feel right anymore.

    Have none of you people heard of Doomsday? As long as you have a DOOM/D2 WADS you can play em.. You can use D3D or Open GL at those same settings.. You can sub in 3D models and MP3s of the music too

    <a href='http://www.doomsdayhq.com' target='_blank'>Doomsday</a>

    If you have the Heritec, Hexen or Final Doom wads you can play those ones too

    You can use Slomo, moslo or CPUkiller. If you run anything in DOSbox then get ready for a colossal performance hit. X Com is nightmarish, in the end I had to end up abandoning DOS and using the Collector's Edition versions to run under XP without tweaks.

    Precisely, and pretty much everyone wants it for X-COM <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I hear work has begun on a flash version of UFO, so you'll be able to play it in your browser, and then there's also the xenocide project which i'd recommend anyone who knows anything about programming should join.... because I want it!

    The bestest dos game ever was obviously Tyrian. Epic in their heyday, a classic top-down shooter. You get to be a carrot!

    Crap server my foot - I just got it in less than a 10th of a second.

    Now where do I send that kingdom? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    If anyone is after smooth running X Com, definitely get your hands on the Collectors Edition, its far superior to using DOSbox and there's a lot fewer bugs involved.

    Edit: IIRC it was mentioned on the DOSbox site that a top end PC would be able to emulate a LOW END 486 type pc. You can run X Com but altering cycle speed makes it unplayable. Far easier to just pick up the Collector's Pack which is an Ebay job for the honest citizen. Runs perfect, interface is right speed, no complaints.

    From what I recall, it does have some really nasty bugs, like blaster boms exploding if the next checkpoint differes from the last in hight only.

    Oh BTW, here are some patches for it:

    IF YOU HAVE AN NVIDIA CARD YOU'll MORE THAN LIKELY NEED THIS:
    <a href='http://www.xcomufo.com/xcom1fix.exe' target='_blank'>XCom video fix</a>
    Corrects the "garbled graphics" video error in the collector's edition on a Windows 98se, ME, 2000, or XP machine. Place the file in the game directory and run it instead of the regular executable.

    Some of you may need this one as well:
    <a href='http://www.xcomufo.com/musfix.dll' target='_blank'>Music Fix</a>
    Fixes the "click-pause" error that many people experience with the collector's edition.

    Ok I mean NEW really nasty bugs. It does fix a lot of the older ones, for instance I've yet to see a green text bug, and all the endings play fine.

    I strongly recommend AGAINST moslo. There's only so much that simply slowing down the game can do. In addition, since moslo doesn't actually emulate DOS, older games might not work anyway.

    I've got quite a lot of old games that I play, and between DOSBox and VDMSound they (almost) all work acceptably. I'd suggest using DOSBox by default, and trying VDMSound if it doesn't work acceptably. Despite the name, VDMSound actually does various other things to help games run better (and personally, I think the latest version of DOSBox's sound emulation is better anyway).
