do you use it
i dont see the point of useing anti aliasing at such high res such as 1280x1240 or more. Does anyone with high level graphics cards even notice a difference in the look of the game at that res? Is it even worth the performance hit? or am i the only one who doesnt see the difference?

Best. Thread title. Ever.

I hope you meant Anti-Aliasing.

And yes, I use it, in HL at least. It doesn't affect performance (wouldn't go >100 anyway even with it off) and corners look way better with it.

[ahhh it got fixed... not that funny anyways...]

Anyways, AA works by blending nearby pixels with other pixels, giving a slight blending/blurring effect, and thus making the images look smoother.

If you were to have a absolute black pixel next to a absolute white pixel, given enough resolution, there would be a single or even multiple gray-scale pixels inbetween, thus making the image appear smoother and sleeker.

Yes, my pants are under lock and key.

. . .

In all seriousness, I do use AA and AF in as many games as possible, including Half-Life. The only games I don't use them in are titles that do not support them, or do not run well with them on (Doom 3 is the only one in the second catagory).

@topic: Just player Join Ops with AA. I have to say that if you see many polygon corners (eg forrest) the effect of AA is even more obvious. It's sooooo smoothy....

To be honest, I just love the phrase "under lock and key."

at 1280x1024 games i usually dont run aa since the lines are pretty smooth already and turning on aa would just steal precious fps from me, but if i play in lower res then sometimes i use aa....

and the topic title rofl.. good deal

The word is Anti-aliasing. That is all.

I didn't understand what was funny untill I saw that coil had edit it and that the true title was quoted below.

Anyway... I do use AA, on games like UT2004, especially Red Orchestra, I notice it quite alot in open maps with people running across the field in the distance. When your screen is covered with coridors that never dwindle too far into the distance it's just a waste.

I think i've only ever used AA in Far Cry and KOTOR. It does make a very noticeable difference for the better.
• EEKEEK Join Date: 2004-02-25 Member: 26898Banned
Definately needed it in Far Cry, at as high as I could: Minor AA would cause a horrible effect when pointing the gun at the sky, and none looked pretty bad with all with plants. I needed 8x to make it look nice

Anti-aliasing isn't really needed in most games, but some people are really picky about visuals.

Hence Anti-Aliasing. It helps to smooth jaggies accross world brushes that are viewed from an angle. This is most prominent in bright, outdoor maps, or games that contain them. This is the reason why people said that DOOM 3 didn't need AA because it's so dark.

Currently there 8x. I do hope for 16x or 32x AA which will smooth out a LOT of jaggies

that would be horrible unless you were running at a huge resolution. :/

Personally I could care less how games look. So on my (old) system AA only serves to steal the precious few FPS I have. Frankly "pretty graphics" are the reson I haven't bought a PC game in a long time, I simply don't want to upgrade my entire system just so I can look at a pretty version of DooM. It is my opinion that no game should need graphics better looking than those of Quake 2 or HL.

As far as I know, AA isn't limited to pass numbers that are powers of two (there's 6x AA). Anything more than 12x would probably be overkill.

Actually I had no idea I was talking about. But if a card can do that, it can probably run stuff WAY faster

Just a question though....what's the difference bete\ween 2x and 2xS? I have a GeForce 4 MX440 and it shows up.

You can usually right-click the control gauge for an explanation.

GeForce cards can, but might not, have all of the following FSAA modes: 2x, 2xQ, 4x, 4xG, 4xS, 6xS, 8xS, and 16x. I haven't seen 2xS before.
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
Sorry, I meant 2xQ XD

I keep forgetting things because of my horrid memory

I don't use AA because:

It slows down my game.
It doesn't really add anything much.
I like the feeling that I'm actually playing a "Game" - unlike most people, I *LIKE* the jaggies.

I'm just odd like that, I guess.

In newer games like Doom 3 FSAA and AA don't really make much difference, the true notice in picture comes from resolution it seems, so no.
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
I run at 1024x768, and never use AA except in ancient games. Mostly it's out of laziness (not wanting to have to go turn it off on games thet it'll slow performance in), but I really don't care about jaggies. A smooth fps is much more important.

I use 8X with NS on 1280xwhatever

The only problem I have found is that to turn it on I use the radeon driver settings, but when I go to play doom (3) I need to put it back to normal cause doom runs really slow with it on as you can imagine

I get 60fps even with 8x and AA on. This is just cause im runniny a 9800pro and an athlon 3000+ 64bit
