do you use it
i dont see the point of useing anti aliasing at such high res such as 1280x1240 or more. Does anyone with high level graphics cards even notice a difference in the look of the game at that res? Is it even worth the performance hit? or am i the only one who doesnt see the difference?

I hope you meant Anti-Aliasing.
And yes, I use it, in HL at least. It doesn't affect performance (wouldn't go >100 anyway even with it off) and corners look way better with it.
Anyways, AA works by blending nearby pixels with other pixels, giving a slight blending/blurring effect, and thus making the images look smoother.
If you were to have a absolute black pixel next to a absolute white pixel, given enough resolution, there would be a single or even multiple gray-scale pixels inbetween, thus making the image appear smoother and sleeker.
. . .
In all seriousness, I do use AA and AF in as many games as possible, including Half-Life. The only games I don't use them in are titles that do not support them, or do not run well with them on (Doom 3 is the only one in the second catagory).

@topic: Just player Join Ops with AA. I have to say that if you see many polygon corners (eg forrest) the effect of AA is even more obvious. It's sooooo smoothy....

To be honest, I just love the phrase "under lock and key."
and the topic title rofl.. good deal
Anyway... I do use AA, on games like UT2004, especially Red Orchestra, I notice it quite alot in open maps with people running across the field in the distance. When your screen is covered with coridors that never dwindle too far into the distance it's just a waste.
Hence Anti-Aliasing. It helps to smooth jaggies accross world brushes that are viewed from an angle. This is most prominent in bright, outdoor maps, or games that contain them. This is the reason why people said that DOOM 3 didn't need AA because it's so dark.
Currently there 8x. I do hope for 16x or 32x AA which will smooth out a LOT of jaggies
that would be horrible unless you were running at a huge resolution. :/
As far as I know, AA isn't limited to pass numbers that are powers of two (there's 6x AA). Anything more than 12x would probably be overkill.
Just a question though....what's the difference bete\ween 2x and 2xS? I have a GeForce 4 MX440 and it shows up.
GeForce cards can, but might not, have all of the following FSAA modes: 2x, 2xQ, 4x, 4xG, 4xS, 6xS, 8xS, and 16x. I haven't seen 2xS before.
I keep forgetting things because of my horrid memory
It slows down my game.
It doesn't really add anything much.
I like the feeling that I'm actually playing a "Game" - unlike most people, I *LIKE* the jaggies.
I'm just odd like that, I guess.
The only problem I have found is that to turn it on I use the radeon driver settings, but when I go to play doom (3) I need to put it back to normal cause doom runs really slow with it on as you can imagine
I get 60fps even with 8x and AA on. This is just cause im runniny a 9800pro and an athlon 3000+ 64bit
