Books To Film

What would you most like to see
came from this thread (the idea that is).

What books (that haven't already been converted to film or, you feel, have been poorly/inaccurately converted) would you like to see translated up into the big silver screen (that isn't silver when the projector is switched on but it's called so nonetheless).

Only one rule, really. Don't just state the book name, because then it's quickly turn into a spam thread. Say what book you'd like to see as a film, what actors would best portray the characters, what parts you think would be good.... well, that's not really a rule. Basically just add a little more detail than "I'd like to see The Beano converted into a horror movie".

Lets see if i can contribute a good thread to these boards! Woo!

Either: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (supposedly in production) or the first Xanth books by Piers Anthony. I don't really have any actors in mind for who could play who, but these are definitely my choices for books to movies.

Well, I think it would be neat if they turned all the Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron series into movies/TV shows. That would kick so much butt I would simply fall into a Star Wars goodness induced catatonic state.

Ender's Game, most definently. But I can't remember any good child actors. All I know is:
Agent Smith (hugo something?) should be Graff or Mr. Anderson.

Oh, and if it were GAMES to film, Deus Ex would be #1, and I think the Campbell guy (Army of Darkness) could be JC.

Anyway, I'D like to see a nationally relased movie based on a Lovecraft work( I think the "Quest of Unknown Kadath"((or sommat, I forgot the title)) would make a nice movie. It's got ghouls, gods, frogmen, awesome cats, and sounds like it would make a great movie, of the swashbuckling/adventure type. "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" would provide an interesting basis for a movie.)

I can't think of any actors at the moment, though.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is of course "in production" for the umpteenth time, with the umpteenth cast.

    Good news this time around:
Martin Freeman from 'The Office' is playing Arthur Dent (an excellent fit)

Bad news: Mos Def is Ford Prefect. Look, I like Mos Def, but I don't quite think a rapper from Brooklyn is going to be able to capture this character.

    I've been wrong before, though.

I'm pretty confident that Mos Def will do just fine. He has acted before, so it's not like they just picked some random rapper off the street.

Anybody see the teaser trailer for it? it's here

Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, with Viggo Mortensen as Roland, Nick Stahl as Eddie, Halle Berry as Suzannah, and Haley Joe Osment as Jake.

    Also, I Am Legend.

No, I know-- I quite liked him in the Italian Job.

However, I just hope they play him as he was written (and as he was performed in the radio series). If they have Mos Def playing Ford Prefect, then I'm game.

If they have Mos Def as a means of 'updating' Ford Prefect with that 'hip, urban edge' those kids are so crazy about these days, then . . . . bleh.

I'm pretty sure they'll stay true to Ford Prefect. Mostly because the script was done by Douglas Adams himself (although modified a little) and by the teaser it seems they're staying to the odd humor of the Hitchhiker's Guide.

See the still photos of Marvin yet? They look good.. very good.. not CGI, either.

The Icewind Dale Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. I'm pretty sure they could make that as big as LOTR.

If things could be done exactly as they are in books, The Return (and possibly its sequels) by William Shatner/Garfield and Judith Reeves-Stevens could make a good movie. However, since most movies don't follow the book exactly, I don't like them. If they don't fit that requirement, I don't want them to be made, since they probably won't do justice to the book.

There`s 4 of Tom Clancy`s books that have been translated to film

    Hunt for Red October
    Patriot Games
    Clear and Present Danger
    and
    *shudder* Sum of all Fears

The last one I haven`t seen since for me having Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan is a no go. I prefferd Harrison Ford.

Without Remorse would be good Mullet, but if they could do it right I would like to see Red Storm Rising, his first book.

Basically a WWIII book but with interesting ideas about bombers attacking via Iceland.

The Icewind Trilogy would be nice Duff Man, but could you imagine trying to get Drizzt`s swordplay right? They would run out of stuntmen.

The Sum of All Fears not only suffered with Smart Alleck being Jack Ryan, but the plot featured holes larger than those you find in the clothing down in the local thrift store. You're better off not ever seeing it than to stain your memories of Jack Ryan with the horror of all that is "The Artist Formerly Known as Bennifer".

Apparently you're all crazed about the Halo books. I've been pretty dubious towards them ever since they named Master Chief John. I mean - that's retarded, we shouldn't know his name. Aside from that they're probably alright.

[No, not that 'Master Chief' is an exceptional name either]

I would actually pick Jurassic Park (by Michael Chrichton). Sure, it's a blockbuster movie, but I think it was done poorly in comparison to how the book goes (and the book has much longer, much better action scenes (along with many more).

They could keep the actors the same, they fit pretty well (excellent casting job, actually).

I want the aviary scene, the river scene (along with the waterfall), some of the raptor scenes (Grant vs the Raptors in the hatchery, especially), Ellie at the Safari Lounge and the Nest scene at the end (if anything, the movie Jurassic Park's ending was lacking the most).

In fact, while we're add it - abolish the travesty that is The Lost World: Jurassic Park and just refilm using half of the stuff in the book. My only recommendation for changing the book's plot would be to let Howard King live - he was one of my more favorite characters.

    Problems with the Lost World:
Kelly is Ian's daughter, and she's black [ties with the statement to the left and the book - Arby is black, not Kelly ], and she's a terrible actress.
Dinosaurs come to the mainland - it breaks the believabilty that this could be a real island - despite how cool that part of the movie is (pretty much the only good part - but it belongs in a different movie, like Dinosaurs in San Francisco).
There's a giant fleet of InGen people (along with some subplot about Hammond losing the park, which is dumb) - and they should be replaced by Dogdson, Baselton and King.
Sarah Harding was cast terribly as Julianne Moore.
Nick van Owen should be hung, shot, stabbed and shot again.
Richard Levine (one of the more key driving forces from the book) is nowhere to be found.
The high hide doesn't match the book in any remote sense.
The mix up between this movie and Jurassic Park 3 where the kid says "The further away from the center of the island you go, the bigger things get." constrasting with "The large predators stay in the middle of the island." in this tLW.
    ...

You know what? The only part in that movie that matches the book is when the trailer is attacked by Tyranosaurs. Take out everything else, and replace it with any of the book's scenes.

Jurassic Park 3 is fine (okay, some slight problems - but there's no book involved, so...pfffft). Jurassic Park 1 is also fine - but would be 100000x better with more scenes from the book (and some minor alterations). Jurassic Park 2 is terrible.

So, there's my request(s). Not that anyone will probably read them .
