Computer problem :/
hi guys, i all of a sudden have this computer problem where, if i run any program, it has a 50% chance of shutting down. About 10 mins ago i double clicked on internet explorer and my whole pc just restarted. When i tried to defrag my pc, it just restarted. Im not sure what caused this, but i ran a virus scanner about an hour ago and removed a trojan from the boot sector. I know its definately not overheating as my pc is under 50 degrees C at all times.

i probably already know the answer: format.

If you're using WinDoze XP, and you think that a system format is due, might you also consider a reinstall. It refreshes your installation, and keeps everything else intact.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then you can format. If it does fix the problem, then all the better.

That would be the answer if it was IE, but it's not just IE, it's all his computer software.

As for your problem, it can a whoe load of things really. A reinstall of Windows if possible would be suggested, and if that doesn't clear up the problem, then you can try a format and reinstall, but be warned, some virii(sp) have been known to hide themselves in a sector and avoid being erased. If the format doesn't work, then this would require more information on your part. But I'll wait till you come back with an answer.

You could try reverting back to a previous state with System Restore if you are using Windows XP. Then again, the trojan could be in those system restore points, so it might just be better to remove them.

I was gonna say that your comp might be overheating but it seems like you have thought of that already, I would still try underclocking your cpu and trying it out for the hell of it.

It sounds like you may have been affected by the Sasser worm. However that normally attacks at computer startup.

You should check your CPU fan/heatsink. It is possible that it has been unseated and is not cooling your CPU properly. I had a similar problem where my computer was fine if I did not run anything (or leave it on too long) but the instant the CPU started doing any amount of calculations it would fail and cause the computer to reboot/shutdown. I reseated the heatsink and all the problems went away.

I know you checked your temperature, however it is possible that the thermister is damaged.

If you have recently installed new hardware, it's possible that your PSU isn't up to specs any more... Other than that, virus scan, check heatsink, and if all else fails format.
