Co_derelict Announcement Thread

lots of screens.
co_derelict is sort of the remnants of a group project comprised of Caboose, KungFuDiscoMonkey, Spacer, Mendasp, and myself. We turned out to have other pursuits that took up too much time for the group to finish the project, so I took on the slower task of doing it myself.

First we'll give some credit. The map almost entirely features a custom texture set courtesy of Spacer and Caboose. It also contains level design by KFDM, and myself currently, with additional work to be added by Mendasp and possibly some of the other team members.

The backstory here is kind of underdeveloped at the moment, but basically involves a new marine ship being docked to an old, derelict ship that is infested by aliens. Decent reasoning WHY the marines would bother with this is still forthcoming, but some screenshots are here now. So, without further ado, here is co_derelict.

This hallway courtesy of KFDM, with a tiny bit of extra lighting and some very stupid looking monitors added by me.

Hey Reese, I still want to help with this map in one way or another, I still have my files, I'll work a bit on it and send it to you (maybe post screens here too). I need inspiration and... motivation, heh.

The water in that room still looks strange, try changing the texture and give it some transparency. The rest is fine to me (I would play a bit more with the contrast on the lighting in some areas, though).

Was this going to be the co map for the contest...?

Yes, it was, but we ran into issues with the group being available for the contest, so i'm going to complete this "in my own time". If it's finished in time for the contest and we are still allowed to submit it at that point maybe it will be, but if not then it will be just another combat map.

-=[Drake]=-: At this point I still want to finish this as a combat map. That was the original intent when the group started this project. More than anything I am really attempting to workhorse the concept we created into fruition. I would love to see this as a ns classic map. I think the setting would be awesome as one. However at this point I really would like to see the original project finished. As for making a ns map out of this afterwords, we'll see how things go. At this point I think by the time I finish agonizing over the creation of this map (remember this is me trying to put out work of the same caliber as the team I joined, if you've seen any of my previous stuff you know how difficult that must be) I think I may be a little burnt out on the theme. It is one that I really like (technically it was my idea) but I guess we'll see. Judging from some previous posts I wouldn't be suprised if some of the other Goatseites managed to create a room or two and toss it my way for this or a ns classic map. Time will tell.

H|CarNagE^8th: Im gone play this map for sure on my server. That is one of the best things a mapper can hear. Especially in NS it seems like a lot of quality maps get made and never see the playtime that they deserve. We really should get around to organizing a centralized ns map list. It would be a goldmine of awesome NS gaming. Anyways, it's good to hear that someone is not only interested, but willing to risk my (more like our) map driving everyone out of their server. (hopefully I won't do that to you)

Mendasp: You are more than welcome to the source for this at any time. I could really use some hints from somebody more proficient in mapping than I am. Especially the compile stage of tweaking I know embarassingly little about. I am planning on fixing that water. I wanted it there for use as psuedo-vent to an as-yet-uncreated area. That said I agree, it looks triple stupid at the moment. Please feel free to post screenshots of the stuff you have been doing and make me look like the nublet I am.

Caboose: Your help is welcome too. Please send all content in .rmf format to.... j/k. Seriously though what I could use from you (and spacer if he's listening.... ) Is more of these quality textures. I'm not trying to say that's the only help i'll take, I am planning on accepting any help from you guys that I can get. But right now things like trim textures, especially the vent textures used in the first screenshot and that nos_* window texture used in the first screenshot I need more of. That and infested versions of some of these textures. I am horrible with photoshop. Please don't make me inflict that on this poor map.

Everyone else: thanks for the comments from anyone that I missed. (could be possible, took me a long time to type all of this with work distracting me) Anyways, good commentary is what makes the mapping world go round, and is worth it's weight in gold (weight as printed in the medium of five tone stone tablets). Thanks for the comments, hopefully more shots soon.

although I think all the people creating marine/marine maps are some kind of d3g3n3r4t3d p30p13, this map looks pretty unusual. unusal in the way that it looks a lot more "possible", not as super-duper-highhigh-TECH like other maps.
keep up the good work. although I will refuse playing this mode.
