MvM is supposed to be officially introduced down the road. That's why MvM maps work right now, some of the preliminary code is there that allows them to work with plugins to fix the bugs. AvA, I'm not sure if that's ever intended to be supported. I've heard mention of it MAYBE once. But it would require a lot of changes to the gameplay to make it playable at all.
Currently, MvM is a "feature" as a loophole that was left in the programming to allow easier implmentation later. AvA is currently similar to this. To be perfectly honest - I wouldn't expect anything this major anytime soon.
AvA isn't currently possible without plugins, there's a few bugs like 1 team only gets a hive, and spawning points are a bit screwed aswell.

Has anyone else tried playing a nice open CS map like CS_assualt, with sv_gravity set really low. You can jump up to the top of the tallest building in a single bound! If you use pistols only and turn the damage down its KINDA like jetpack on jetpack ....
MvsM is fun though, shotguns and JP are brutally effective against marines. Fly over head and shower them in bullets <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
A MvsM with 2 commanders would be fun, but I doubt it would be easy to get to work.

Ive played 1 AvA map so far, probably the same one you have all played. A hive in the middle of a big room, the 2nd team spawns behind forcefields that propel them into the room.
AvA is a lot of fun, though there is no way for the defenders to win. And the attackers level up a lot slower. So its usually a long, long bloodbath until the defenders reach the level cap, then the attackers catch up and kill the hive.
Also, attackers dont have many abilities, which is annoying.

i play custom servers mainly, cause they can be really fun, used to play Exetel custom, but they are total monkeyf***ers, pardon the language, so now i play APGN custom maps. most of the admins at exetel got fired so we all moved there
but back to topic: MvM and CO = bad mix aka CS = crappy game
