For those who dont know, Litestep is a shell, such as Windows Explorer is. (download at <a href='http://www.litestep.net' target='_blank'>http://www.litestep.net</a>)

Anyway, i've started to make an NS Theme for it, seeing as it's a great game, a great shell, and they should be combined ^__^.

First off let me appologize for the attatchment being low quality, my host is down, it appears, and i had to resize it so it wouldnt stretch the browser screen too much. once it is back up i will upload, and post a link.

Now the features at the moment, are:

-an ns_origin screeny as the background
-The alien's Energy bar as the taskbar, and each task is as if it's filling up the energy bar (even goes from bottom to top, as it should).
-hive sprites to show wich Virtual Desktop is currently in use
-Command box in lower left corner

and i have yet to mess with the system try, or the winamp buttons, and i'm up for any suggestions to really make this a good theme, as well i planned on making a Marine version (a seperate theme, not sub-theme) if this one turns out well. That said, here's the screeny

can be, but they arent in my theme. sorry no links for tuts, i couldnt find any myself, you just have to kinda browse the RC files, make your bmps, and hope you get it right lol. um, search google for litestep modules, and you can find help there sometimes..

And dont do the TSA theme, i planned on doing both Alien and Marine versions <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

the time, is a command line, and no there isnt a way, as far as i know yet, to make it transparent, nor use bmps as a font, and i'm not going to make a font too look like the HUD sprites (plus i dont know how to make the fonts.) but thanks for the feedback people!

I love the NS media skin thingy.

    Is it for WMP9? I'd like it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

nifty save for one major thing:
    task bar needs some serious work <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The text on it just looks compleatly wrong...
some how you need to make the text fit with the adren..
as is it is simply over layed on top (shadows, curve etc don't effect it)
Also the font seems small/thin (thus making it again contrast with the adren)

my suggestion would be an organic style font that would some how interact with the background

The font used for most font-y things in NS is Minion. Unfortunately, it is not a free font.
  • BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Agreed that the taskbar needs work ^__^ Hence it is not complete yet. I'm going to try and fix the... repetive-ness of it, and i can look for some better fonts on 1001fonts.com. I can tweek the placement of the text as well, seeing as i havent yet, i wanted to complete other things. Oh one thing i wanted to point out on the AMP controls, over on the right it appears that there's nothing there, however it's a button with a sensory chamber, to toggle the winamp window heh. (lights up on hover) and IRT SinSpawn, This is NOT a media player skin, this is a desktop skin, a Theme, for LiteStep, a Shell, such as windows explorer.

click the link in the first post.

also, check 101fonts.com too... they have some great fonts there too with a really cool interface.
  • BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
only heard of 1001fonts.com (previously mentioned by moi) not 101fonts.com, but i might try it anyway. And yes, dragonmech, please consult the first line of my first post, it tells what litestep is.

did a touchup on the adren-taskbar, and the tasks are now more button-ish looking, and i'm sorry but i like the font as it looks on it, if you wish to change it you can in tasks.rc. Anyway, here it is! unzip to your theme directory and it SHOULD work perfectly <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I like it, I did need something better than the popup menu, so I ripped lsnkmenu from another theme, and fiddled with its colors, and this it became:
    Click <a href='http://www.imageuploader.net/images/617875NS_modified.jpg' target='_blank'>-=[here]=-</a>
(links to a 1024x768 110 kb jpg file name 617875NS_modified.jpg showing my desktop, quality is quite low due to compression)

btw BAshh, I'm missing a pause button on the winamp bar and something to show the current time would be nice (^__^)

oh and the tasks are above everything else..
  • BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
command line shows the time when winamp isnt active.

i dont mind just the popup menu ^__^ so it wasnt a problem to me. but gj at least you know how to edit it for yourself

Look at the image. everybody see what i'm pointing out? yes, thats right, those evil looking lines where the floor switches blurriness. This is caused by the different levels of mip-mapping intersecting, and not smoothing properly. A series of smoothing algorithms were developed to fix this, called Bilinear and Trilinear Filtering. I won't go into details, if you're interested, google it, there are some very interesting whitepapers around about it.

TO TURN ON TRILINEAR FILTERING IN HALF-LIFE/NS/CS/DoD ETC...

first, make sure this feature is available and enabled in your video card's Advanced Properties, then in the Half-Life console, enter

    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR

remember, its a command, not a cvar, so it needs to be done every time you load the game. put it in your autoexec.cfg. put it SOMEWHERE. TATTOO IT ACROSS YOUR FOREHEAD.

i may seem overly passionate about this, but i've seen so many great screenshots and artwork <b>marred</b>, yes, <u><b>MARRED</b></u> by this simple failing of what should be common knowledge.

**also note that there are different render modes from the default GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST and GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR. experiment to get different effects.

isnt their also an anitiscopic filter that can fix that?
