This was taken from a steam post on the steam forums related to a TFC bug reported by Whit.

Name: Hitscan / Hitbox bug.

Explanation: This is a bug that's occurring frequently on most servers. When in effect, the hitbox bug results in 'afflicted' players being extremely tough to hit successfully with hitscan weapons. The effect appears to move the hitboxes ahead of the player (in that the player is always behind their hitbox). As a consequence, it is like a reverse of the old interp effect, and a return to the days of leading targets. Unfortunately, the faster the class, the more pronounced the effect. A scout with the hitbox bug is so fast and the hitboxes so seperated from the player that using grenades and projectile weapons (like the RPG) is the only way to kill them. No one has ever figured out for sure what causes this bug. It can affect players usiing the rates and configs they've always used. Their game does not suffer as a result, everything appears normal to them. Some players seem to experience this bug more than others, but in general, it can potentially affect anyone. Reconnecting to the server usually has little or no effect (for either the person experiencing the bug, or the players faced with the problem of dealing with the aforementioned player). In general, on an 18 person clanserver, you can expect one or two to be experiencing the bug. Curiously, some people appear to only be partially unhittable (in that a full on shot will do half damage) whilst others are just totally unhittable unless one leads them with the shot by half to one bodylength (sometimes more, if they are a scout).

Here's the full steam post.

wow always wondered why I did so well when I took the reserved spot in a server....but anyways...that would change alot of stuff....think of matches that have been played in all leagues...that last guy joining...and had someone known but the other team not....hmmmm....maybe it's a conspiracy....

Just to clarify ( as it seems a lot of people aren't getting it),

You are only bugged if you take the last slot of the server, not if you're the last person to join

Examples would be the person to join a 19/20 server or 16/17, not a 14/16.

Interesting read although the fact we're still finding all these bugs how many years since hl has been out ?

Makes me giggle / grimace in equal measure

And just to clarify even more, you aren't necessarily bugged in this situation either. The first person to join that slot will be bugged; only after he leaves and somebody else joins the last slot will they then be bugged. Someone could be sitting by themselves in the server and still be bugged if they joined when the final slot was the only one left. The only way to know for sure is to look at status.

If this bug has existed even during WON times, how come it was not as noticeable back them as it is now?

Sorry to pick on you but I'm getting tired of these type of responses. It has NOT been known for ages. What has been known is that sometimes for no discernable reason one player would seem hard to hit. Often people wouldn't even notice that it was the same person. That's hardly anything. The TFC related post didn't have the details down correctly, it only had guesses. This is real proof that is 100% reproducible all the time. The NS devs and community deserve credit for the hard work they've put into working this out down to the level they have. Not repeated 'yeah we knew all about that a long time ago' posts.

It is wierd that it was noticed all of a sudden on steam even though it existed on WON.

Could the switch from WON to Steam amplify the bug or make the bug more noticeable?

I'm thinking the biggest thing that made it noticable was the fact that Combat was introduced in 3.0 beta testing on steam.
Combat forced more intense fighting in closer quarters and literally more combat. It was only a matter of time before you realized you were fighting some supers skulk, as celerity is a popular upgrade and would amplify the affects of the bug more.
At least, that's my theory, but it makes the most sense.

There were more hitbox misallignments in 2.0 which probably were more noticeable, so if this bug was in play then maybe people thought that other bugs were responsible for the effects.

Bingo... the fact that the hitboxes were wrong prior to 3.0 allowed many of these issues to be brushed over as part of that issue..

A fix has been identified by Valve, and they will push the update via Steam when they can (obviously, the recent/current DDoS attacks against Steam have been making things very hectic for them).

WAY TO GO.

GJ NS community.

This has been in all mods for a long time, and but no one ever manged to track it down.

This has been noticed in TFC for a long time but you guys found it WAY TO GO.

Thousands of people should be thanking you. You have made all HL gaming better forever.

VERY few people can say that.
