on a new system
im going to college in August, so im going to be getting a new system soon.

i live in a DELL family, so you wouldnt expect me of all people to make this kind of thread.

the problem is, the CHEAPEST sysem dell offers that DOESNT have integrated Video hardware is over the PC budget.

so i need to know what a good system setup would be for ~$600 (plz list cases and power supplies and whatever else)

also, are there any good computer hardware stores in the Omaha, NE area, or should i stick to online purchasing?

Please help, i dont want a comp that cant run the new stuff that is coming out (hopefully) soon

it might be a little tough to get a comp that is gonna run the new stuff for around 600. your best bet would be to go to a computer show somewhere in your area.

Why don't you just get one that does have integrated graphics then put a decent card in? Or is it one of those that doesn't allow you to do so? I had a Packard Bell like that. I had to flip a jumper on the motherboard.

i dunno, lemme quick check if i can find out

    :edit:

i didnt see anything on the dell website, does anyone know whether steve's idea would work (Dimension 2400) if so, what would a good card be?

:edit: AHA!! it has 3 PCI slots

If it doesn't have an AGP slot then you probably won't be able to run any of the new stuff that's coming out since that's what most graphics cards use nowadays. Semi-decent PCI graphics cards are extremely expensive compared to AGP ones from what I've saw.

There is a new type of card coming out soon that uses "PCI Express". The thing is, I'm not sure if they use a regular PCI slot or a new special one.

You need a PCI Express mobo to use PCI Express. As for a very decent comp for $600... that's pushing it. A vid card is gonna be ~$150-$200, and a CPU about the same. There's $300-$400 right there. A HDD is about $75, sound card about $100, case about $100 and a mobo is about $100. Thats not including a monitor, optical drive, keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, etc, and you've already reached or exceeded your limit.

Edit: PCI graphics cards are NOT worth it. They won't play most of last year's games, let alone stuff like FarCry. The most advanced I've seen is a Radeon 9200, and thats still with a slower connection to the motherboard.

Yeah I just realized we're probably not talking the same currency here I got some of my figures off of bestbuy's site (USD) and some off of futureshop's site (CDN). Heh. I COULD build one out here for under $600, using off the shelf parts.

    $179 - Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Best Buy)
    $120 - AMD AthlonXP 2900 w/mobo (Fry's)
    $40 - 80GB Western Digital IDE HDD (Fry's, after $40 mail-in)
$5 - Case w/350w PSU (Always is at least one at Fry's, maybe $20)
    $50 - 8x DVD/CD burner (Fry's)
$20 - NIC (Fry's, if the mobo doesn't have one... usually they do)
    $120 - 1GB PC3200 Corsair DDR (Fry's, 2x 512 DIMM, after $30 mail-in... also $70 for one 512 dimm of the same stuff)

So far, that's about $550 before tax, lacking a keyboard and mouse which would run about twenty or thirty bucks combined.
Add on about $120 for a DECENT monitor (as in, can handle 1600x1200x32 at least) on sale, and you have a full machine for about $750, before tax.

Cutting to the baseline, kill the burner and slap in a standard CD drive (non-dvd) -$30, kill half the ram -$50, and get a crappy monitor -$50... and you have one for around $620.
Note that is before tax, and counting any mail-in rebates still. So the counter purchase price will be a bit higher.

If you have a monitor/keyboard already, that'll drop the price more.

Oh, and no sound card is listed given that most mobos already have on-board audio. Tack on $20 for an OEM SBLive Value, if you can't live with the onboard.

talesin's got it before i could post.

600$ builds a VERY nice computer these days, and youll have a few years warantee on every one of those parts that you do the registration card for.

spend a little more on the motherboard and power supply for extra reliability, and youre looking at $750 tops.
