Isp? Bug? Argh!

Everytime I play online whether it's NS or CS I keep getting lag spikes

I am not downloading.

Nothing is using my internet connection apart from mIRC, MSN, and the game - this hasn't happened before when i had these open.

NTL (ISP) being a ****? Or something foreign in my computer? Or something that needs a "fix"?

Any ideas?

    Do a traceroute to the servers you play on from your connection. If it's within the range of your isp, your isp is lagging, if not, it might be the server. Are you getting lag or fps drops?

    Are you on a router? If so, have you recently switched routers?

    Perhaps this thread needs to take a trip around the tech support forums, but you might want to look into your rate, cl_updaterate, and cl_cmdrate settings. If it's every server, I'm sure it's probably something with those settings.

    I'm on a 150k cable modem - I don't think I am on a route ( <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    rate 15000 (well it was, but it seems to keep disappearing from my config once I play...)

    cl_updaterate 70

    cl_cmdrate 70

    That's pretty low for a cable modem... anyway.

    It sounds like you have packet loss. Open up the command prompt and do a

    ping -n 50 www.google.com

    This will ping google 50 times (enough to get a rough idea of how many packets you are loosing). See how many of the pings time out, and how many jump in speed (90ms to like 500-1000 ms).

    If it's more than 2-3% that's a problem.

    He prolly means 150 kilobytes, not kilobits, which isn't so bad. Half of mine, which is about as fast as cable gets download-wise.

    Are you using a splitter to connect both your tv and modem to the same outlet? I had a lot of trouble when I was using a splitter that wasn't rated correctly.

    whats a splitter :s

    ----cable----modem(external)---usb cable----computer

    sigh <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> might just phone them up and give them a shouting <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well, for one all UK DSL connections <b>require</b> a Microfilter on them to operate correctly.

    Some older BT sockets incorporate these, but they're largely regarded as useless. You should have got some microfilters with your Modem...

    <img src='http://www.theelectricalshop.com/catalog/images/TE04529-01.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Some DSL lines <b>do</b> work without them, but these are the exception, not the rule. And as your S/N ratios change and more people take DSL in your area, these can be the factor that pushes your connection over the edge.

    This might have NOTHING to do with your problem, but having done the job of ISP tech support, we wouldn't touch your connection until you had the hardware properly configured. I.E It was filtered.
