My Poor Poor Power Supply

I let the smoke out
At 7:30 pm today my old 300 watt power supply died after 3 days of constant strain. I was enjoying a nice game of The Specialist when suddenly the screen goes black and the smell of burnt electonics emanates from my machine. Two hours later I'm back with a nice new 430 watt power supply. Im just gald it didn't bake my processor.

I had been running for five days straight without a reboot and the ambient temerature of our basement was 70-80 degrees fahrenheit.

I had a powersupply almost catch fire once.

I left it on overnight, woke up halfway thru the night. The fan had mysteriosuly stopped on its own and I could smell frying electronics. I quickly pulled the plug.

Funny part is I still use the same powersupply, just everytime I boot my computer, I have to "jumpstart" the fan by pushing it with a butterknife. It only rarely ever stops when the computer is actully on.

What kind of PSUs you guys use? I have two Thermaltake's and they've been flawless.

My former power supply was an AGI, but the ambient temperature was probably a little high plus i have a relatively good video card as well as a decent audio card.

My comp has been running, without a reboot, since 3:44:16 AM, May 3rd, 2004 (according to my uptime), with no problems whatsoever . But then again, I live in Alberta, so its not exactly what one might call "warm" most of the time. The only danger my comp is in is from flooding... with 150mm of rain yesterday alone (a lot when you live in a desert).

You guys need more case fans or something. I don't think I've rebooted my comp yet this month, and it's not as if it's cool on the top floor or my house in the middle of summer.

Mine has gone on for long periods of times with no time for it to cool down. I restart the computer every now and then but I rarely turn it off. The only cool down time it has gotten ironically is when the power went out a few weeks ago.

I've had mine running for 2 months straight before, and it hasn't fried itself....

Well, not only that, but it's an off-the-shelf china made PSU....

Man I must've been luck picking THAT up.
