Skulking 101

a set of demos for you guys
Here we go. I've had plenty of discussions in the public beta forums where it comes down to bunnyhopping. To be perfectly frank, I hate bunnyhopping. Seeing a fatty bounce down the hall like a bouncy ball on concrete is just plain stupid. Well, people have argued that it is the only way they can kill things as skulks. Well, IT ISN'T.

Here is a perfectly good way to kill people as skulks. The only modifications I have made to my copy of NS are the following:

Crosshairs for leap and xenocide
and my settings and controls.

I have no scripts, no hacks, no nothing. By the way, my gamma stays low for some reason... but I like it that way.

As one last note, the people on this server may get a slight bit profane at times, but I don't think there's anything here that would get somebody's post edited on these forums, which is probably good enough.

Seven demos on co_kestral of me skulking.
Well, here's the director's commentary.

The first demo. What you see is the first round of a match on co_kestral. I usually break in that map by scooting along to my favorite hiding spot above the marine spawn. The first marine to happen up there is the one who has a passion for knife kills (all of us know it, he's a server regular). We quickly dispatch him, because over voice comms, a teammate has alerted us to a situation at the hive. After that, a temporary lapse of attention allowed two marines up the ladder to wax me. Why did the initial ambush work? We had three skulks around a one-man choke point. Simple and effective.

What I did right: ambush by an easy choke point. Close quarters.
What I did wrong: attention lapse allowed them to accumulate up there and kill me.

The second demo. This is the second round of the same map, where the two teams are both well-matched. I climb back up to my post, hoping to make up for my mistake last time. I notice a lot of marines using the hallways that lead the front way towards the hive. A vent in my little nest leads straight down to these hallways, allowing instant access and suprise of enemy marines. Well, I wasn't having a good day, and I couldn't get into the vent. I know, that's a silly noob thing. But you notice a marine going straight across the hallway with a skulk behind him. Well, the skulk won the battle, and was killed by the next marine. When I got down there, it looks like the parasited marine had made his way to my right to blow my brains in.

What I did right: good ambush point.
What I did wrong: unable to climb into a vent. Please, shoot me now.

The third demo. I evolve leap, to display how effective it can be at medium range assault. I get outside, then called back to the hive. We quickly take out the smurf and I nest up in a little corner. When I hear marines go by, I wait a bit, and then strike. Well, binding pop-up menu to right-click didn't help. I did get one bite on him, so the results if I didn't hit my pop-up menu could have gone both ways.

What I did right: I was in their face before they had their weapons aimed.
What I did wrong: I'm going to bind the menu somewhere else, eventually. Plus, the other skulk raised his suspicions about my ambush spot, so he was ready.

The fourth demo. This is how I like it done. I start out in the hive. Upon hearing that there are numerous marines outside, I try to get around them. By the time I get around, they are dead, and I take my post in the same place as demo #3. Again, I wait for a few marines to go by, and then... I heard a marine impact by that cylinder area. I look down in the vent, catch a glimpse of him, and decide that that would not be an ideal situation for me. Instead, I leap into action agains a pair of marines who were battling a few skulks. Getting around them was a cinch, since they were already occupied.

What I did right: I timed my leap with my allie's distraction and assault well, and I was lucky enough to not get shot by anybody behind those two.
What I did wrong: I delayed quite a bit when I heard the guy coming up behind me. Fortunately, I didn't decide to attack him.

The fifth demo. I spotted a marine behind the hive duking it out with a few skulks, and decide to help. After he dies, I go through the back paths, and I must have missed the marine somewhere along the line. I hear the footsteps behind me, and take the marine on in MY turf- close quarters. I admit, I'm not the best as a skulk, but being so close gave me the upper hand. I advance, to hear a few marines on the other side of the door. I perch above the door, and I see their feet. Thinking they had spotted me, I hurled my 2-hp self against them just to expire under the shotgun.

What I did right: I caught the first marine in close quarters, definitely gave the upper hand to me.
What I did wrong: hastily chose an ambush point for the next set, and I attacked them prematurely with too little health.

The sixth demo. Here, I get outside and hide right by the door. It wasn't the best spot, but the marines were already coming. I was lucky enough to see a careless one pass me by, so I leapt onto him. If I was better, I might have survived to deal him the final blow, but after I died a skulk dispatched him easily anyway.

What I did right: I had leap at hand, and I was lucky enough to escape detection.
What I did wrong: I'm not terribly good at combat in dark areas (my gamma is set low, I find it fun). Also, not being found in a spot like that is a 1/4 chance.

The seventh demo. I was going to go up to my above-the-marine-spawn nest, but upon getting to the top of the cylinder, the kill reports took a turn for the worse. I decided to investigate, so I got down and leapt into action. Well, instead of landing on him, I flew past as I sunk my teeth into him, letting him place a shotgun shot into my skull.

What I did right: I had leap, and I had targets.
What I did wrong: Bad timing. I think he spotted me, so I leapt pase him and got waxed. Even if I did leap onto him instead of past him, he probably would have blown me away anyway.

Sorry about that... do you want me to take any of the demos out? I think my point can still be demonstrated with a few of them missing.
