How To Train Your Marines?

ShotgunEdShotgunEd Join Date: 2004-01-02 Member: 24966Members

Clan Training
The players in my clan have individualy a fair bit of skill, they aren't as good as me but they ain't bad =) When we play as a team we really don't do ourselves justice. I understand this is what can make great clans (teamwork) but I was just wondering what sort of training I could put the maggots through to turn them into a well oiled killing machine?

Any and all suggestions welcome.

You can get skill (aim, knowing what to do, etc) from playing hours on end in public games, but teamwork only generates from practising loads together in clanmatches I think...

All your guys can do is play loads, and they'll slowly get better, if they don't, there's little hope left

As the leader of a NS clan that's coming up to it's 2nd birthday, I personally find that the best way to raise the teamwork of your clan members is to just play with them, a lot. I'm not just talking scrims and pracs, I'm talking joining random pub servers and just working together.
Because some of the older members in my clan have been in it with me since the beginning we can effectively play wordlessly, there has been a number of times where we have set up complex ambushes without a word exchanged between the participants.

Teamwork really just stems from knowing what your other teammates are capable of and backing them up when they're in a situation they can't (easily) handle alone. Of course from there stems squad tactics, proper communication, moving in groups, diversions and all manner of wonderous things.

Step one: leave your ego at the door. Teamwork begins when the teammates stop thinking they're better than the others.

Pug, scrim, and practice. Make sure your commander knows the strengths and weaknesses of all his marines.

I dont know about everyone else, but eR got its teamwork through experience. After about 6 months with about the same exact line up in scrim and in match we started to do better as a team and just worked up in that way. It helps alot to have a consistent lineup and rarely move new people into the scene.

#NSlearn to learn the latest tactics.

but as far as teamwork goes. Trust has to develop. If they cannot trust each other, it doesn't matter how skilled they are, it won't work.

My former clan iRiot had some of the best shooters in all of NS. We couldn't beat some teams though because our teamwork was horrid.

teamwork takes time to develop. Certain teams click faster than others, but the main thing is you can let losses bother you, they are going to happen.

Just keep playing. It will develop.

Like many already stated, it's practice (scrims, not pugs or pubs) with your team and a more or less constant lineup.

Take my current clan ariadne for an example: After tohst folded (easily one of europes top clans at that point) some went inactive, others joined clans like ktdm or torment, and yet others decided to form a new german clan. With a new commander (someone that never commed mainly before) and a whole lot of new players we started to play our first matches, and well, we sucked badly. We screwed up every situation that you can think of: While building pgs/tfs the hmg/sg guys started to build instead of the light marines standing nearby, when trying to rush the hive we all kind of played pub style and all died without taking the hive down (I think we didn't take one hive down in the beginning ).

Overtime, as new people joined, old ones left, and our commander got more experienced, our marine play got better and better. With a pretty steady lineup and a lot of scrims (1 - 3 a day) we improved a lot in the following weeks. We are still not perfect (considering our marine teamplay) but if we concentrate we can take on good clans and draw them or even win. I'd say thats good for just 3 months of playing together =D

Leave your ego at the door is right, be polite yet firm to teammates, tell them and they can learn from experience

good, sound advice right there. Nobody wants to scrim a team thats like "LOL WE R 1337!" and generally have bad attitudes.

Just scrim. as much as possible, win lose or tie.

As your scrimming you'll start noticing other people's play style and how they augment ur play style. Just play and pretty soon you'll know what each other is going to do before saying anything. It make take a few months tho.

and either get ventrillo or teamspeak... helps a whole lot.

to have a successful marine round there must be alot of communication between each player and each person sticking to their roles , etc capping res & pressuring hive its vital that on each scrim you keep your players on the same role so there is no confusion & after lots of pracs everything will fall into place.

I found it much easier to organize an earlier clan I was in after basically forcing them to use ventrillo instead of solely using IRC to communicate outside of a game.
• CaMCaM Join Date: 2004-07-05 Member: 29735Members
i think ventrillo / teamspeak is good to use when organising strats prior war without having to be inside the server.
• SiDSquishySiDSquishy Join Date: 2003-10-15 Member: 21704Members
Also Ventrillo doesn't play over ingame sounds if you don't want it to. So your coms bitching won't let skulks eat you.
• AmplifierAmplifier Join Date: 2004-02-19 Member: 26708Members, Constellation
Vent is also VERY useful if say someone drops

Convo

Commander: I think _____ just dropped, hey can someone else come in?
Person that was not in game: I can, connecting now

Vent > Ingame
• ekentekent Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7801Members
I suggest inventing a totally wierd strat involving heavy rushes, movement or sens first, catalysts, or something like that, then practicing it a lot. Especially if the strat sucks it will make you work harder to get the same victory. Most good teamwork comes from necessity first. You can always fall back on the regular strats when you need to (although I advise using them as well just for the practice).

As far as trust goes, pub with each other and practice ramboing. Learning to cover each other against hordes of crappy pub skulks translates well into good coverage in a competitive environment. If you can bait well for your teammate and know what they're doing just by how they move around in game then you are probably at a good point.

Practice, practice, practice. Eventually you should be able to tell if some people on your team are just not putting forth the effort it takes, and those people you actually need to talk to or pinkslip .
