Starting Hives

love and hate
Id like to know what hives you like and dislike starting at,playing as aliens.

Furnace hive on origin for example. I find it gives the aliens a real disadvantage starting here. Bassically you have to take double, if you dont marines are set up, nice and close to vent for sieging and far enough away from you to take biodome without too much hassle. Also double on this map is real easy to siege

Also the only real way into vent hive (unless you really wana go the long way) is going down through that dodgy vent which is seriously easy to cover as marines.

Another one I can think of is Subspace hive on nancy (it is nancy innit?)

Anyway subspace hive is rediculous, it is seriously easy for marines to siege from mother interface, especially since the only way to get at them it to run down that long **** corridor which if the marines can even point their lmgs in the ight direction you wont get anywhere. And the vent systems, which are easy to mine.

Sorry it ended up turning into a griping session, but anyway what other hives to you like/dislike starting at?

Maby its just a personal thing, but I find starting computer core in eclipse is a nightmare, it always feels like there is no safe node on the map to drop without at least 2 skulks covering your gorge butt 24/7

oh I find cc nice because its in middle of map as far as possible from mstart.
You can easily get anything from there.

mainentance is hell on other hand. you have to go through those corridors which marines allmost everytime come at beginning

- Pipeline on ns_veil (spawncamping anyone? Plus not a single rt you can defend)
- Maintance and to an extent eclipse (mainly due to the rts) on ns_eclipse
- Powersilo on ns_nothing (again no rts you can defend good)
- Waste on ns_tanith (too little rts you can build)
- Drill access & sewer on ns_minesshaft. But that map is a total screwup anyway.
Why can't mappers drop at least ONE rt in close proximity to the main hive, like on ns_agora?
- Cooling (only supply way nearby) & pressure control (Storage D & heating room are way too easy to take down as marine) on ns_metal

That whole map just seems small to me, so that marines (or aliens) can get to any of the nodes quickly.

ventilation hive in caged is pretty bad. Marines can easily set up a base on top of the elevator and siege and can also lob nades down towards where aliens spawn. The elevator (most of the time) is the only way out for gorges and onos as the other entrance is usually closed, and when its been welded, the marines can also set up a base thats easily defendable because of the long hallway. If marines hold double, they have an easy path into vent through the weldable doors. Sewer in the same place is just as bad. When marines have vent locked down and taken double, it's almost impossible to get to generator or pretty much anywhere on that side of the map, as they'd have to go though double, marine start, or locked down vent. Gen is bad too, as theres a long hallway beside it that marines can easily siege from and defend.

Sewer or Gen on Caged; they both seem so isolated from the rest of the map and gen ecspecially isnt near very many res nodes

Sewer on caged for worst hive EVAR!!!11 Most easy to spawncamp, yet one of the worst hives to actually take. It's flat out horrible for BOTH teams. A marine assault has to deal with small room to run around in and lots of junk on the floor to get stuck on. You can't jump from the lower areas to the slightly higher areas without going to the ladders first. The comm can't drop meds or ammo in half the room. It's too small for effective jetpacking. And a marine reloc there can turtle forever. Ladders for onos and fade deathtraps to get in AND out of it. Marines can sit a purification and upper sewer and camp just about anything that comes out of it... ugh. It's just an evil evil hive.

Power Silo rocks, or used to.
Aaah I remember the days of laming up the whole place....a death trap.

And the lone gorge up top, building OC's and trying to take down the Heavy Armour train passing through.

*sniff*

The remade version is supposed to have two real entrances/exits, so it should be better in the next release.

Speaking of vent hive... Ever been trapped as an onos there? One lmg can pin you inside vent/generator by camping the top of the ladder at double.

Yeah which is why I said that Aliens have to take double. Origin is only good if you start in biodome really. You have computer, zeno research RT's close by and double is nice and close, also the vent from bio to vent hive is alot safer then then vent from furnace to vent hive.

LOL, impy keeps posting pictures of his white and red x-box. :D YOUR POSTS WOULD BE FUNNIER WITH WORDS.

Generator and Sewer on ns_caged are annoying because they don't have an incorporated resource node inside the actual hive room. Both Gen and Sewer have their starting resnodes placed outside, in Stability, and Pumping. This makes it hard for the aliens to instantly repel attackers, so a one or two man commando squad has a good chance of killing the RT on the first or second push. It's really annoying. I know that different NS maps are set up so they have some individuality and they don't all end up bland and symetrical like ns_veil, but imagine if there was a map where the marine start RT was out of sight of the command chair. And you had to run for fifteen seconds and then go into another room to protect it. Everyone would hate that map because the marines would lose their starting RT almost every time. Caged is overdue for a rework.

Yeah, ns_caged isn't that great a map. When marines take double, they've got good entrances into all 3 hives, and almost all corridors leads to double, so aliens always have no chance to get to the other side of the map.

Vent 3-C in hera isn't that good either. The marines have a clear shot of everything including the hive from the catwalk up above. Its basically shooting fish in a barrel.

Heres a list of other hives I think are bad and why:

Bast Refinery-much too big for aliens to defend.
Bast Engine Room-1 exit, onos easy meat.
Lost Equilibrium-Obviously the siege room.
Eclipse Maintenance-2 long corridors for exits, easy marine kills.
Nancy Port Engine-1 exit, easily defendable by marines.
Ayumi The northernmost hive (forgot name)-1 exit, long corridor.
and the list goes on.....

Come to think of it, there really isn't a good hive area for aliens to defend.

I find Feedwater on bast a great hive to defend.

But I have to second Engine on bast being the worst hive ever. No RTs closeby, giant open corridor. Bleh.

I think engine is a lovely hive if aliens are a bit skilled.
aliens should secure/lame Main aft and lower junction, and they are fine with lots of res!
u should have enough time to get refinary up.
watchout for sneaking rines using the water route from feed.

Engine is most easy to defend as well using the vents.

maybe engine is my all time favorite hive.

I like starting power silo , you can right away put up Miasma (need 2 OCs to defend it) that one RT with the pipeline that runs close to powersilo (that place is the most vacant location in the game of NS, I have played hundreds of games where a marine never once acctually went to that location) and vent (which will be hard to defend later, but is good for the first five or so minutes in the game). The only hard thing about powersilo is that starting there means you will have to fight to keep viaduct, because the marines seal up generator every single game.

On eclipse starting maint is easy, put up U-turn, and CC RTs, compared to starting CC where no one will defend Uturn of you drop it, and you already have CC, but both other hives are too close to marine start to leave an ungaurded RT in.

Worst hives:

1. Any hive on ns_bast. Refinery is JP heaven, engine is soooo close to MS and very seigable, and feedwater is right beside double (therefore constantly under attack) and seigeable from 2 long marine-friendly corridors.
2. Powersilo on ns_nothing. Just finished 2 games on NSA where we (marines) had the rest of the map before the first skulks hit marine start.
3. Maintenance on ns_eclipse. So hard to get anywhere, and too easy to lock off/spawncamp.
4. Equilibrium on ns_lost. Siege room.
Lots and lots more, but any bast hive is by far the worst.
• XCanXCan Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5904Members, Constellation
Maintenence: A couple of marines camping around keyhole will prevent all skulks from exiting. Although it has been better with the new vent system under keyhole, it still needs a couple more exits.

Computer Core: This is a funny hive room as I find it's the only one with very few marines who actually can camp inside the hive close to the RT and create a gigantic spawn-queue.
