Cloaking mechanics & concerns

As some of you know I'm an S&I player although that may change on the 31st. Anyway, those of you that haev played know there is a cloaking device in S&I. Well it's quite hard for me to comment on this since it works fine for me. The thing is, I've talked to players on S&I that say the person using the cloaking device is completly visible to them. I don't think they were using cheats or they wouldn't admit it (they weren't confronted, just brought the topic up).
Now I expect this problem is something to do with their graphics card or video mode and I know it's very rare as I only heard of 2 people that could see cloaked players.
I'm just wondering if the cloaking works in the same was in NS, and how safe we can expect to be when cloaked. I don't want to see it as a feature that just doesn't get used because people are scared that everyone can still see them.
I guess I should have brought this post up quite a while ago, I only remembered when I saw a post about cloaking.

There are 3 levels of cloak.

1st level is some what transparant, 2ns is almost invisible, 3rd is completly invisible.

Cloaking only activates a few seconds after you stop moving.

In all the PT's I've ever been in, cloaking has always worked fine.  No one said they could see someone when they were supposed to be cloaked (and at lvl3) and no one has complained that they died when cloaked when they shouldnt have.

I'm pretty sure it will work like you'd expect and you need not worry about it.

I know exactly what you are on about Vo0do0-MoNk3h, as I have the exact same problem with starlancer (M$ space combat sim).

Ships would go through their cloaking anim and remain completely visible to me... Needless to say it made some enemies a lot easier than they should have been <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

However, on the exact same computer with the exact same specs and settings, the cloaking device in SI works normally.

Perhaps it has something to do with the video mode it's run in? I remember I was using Software T&L on Starlancer, so maybe this is a software rendering issue?

Software rendering wont be available on the first release, and hopefully if software rendering is the cause of this weird bug it'll get caught out in the playtests...

Ive yet to hear of any problems with it but if youve only heard of 2 people that can see cloaked players then I doubt it would have been found in the play test anyway.
Id just wait for the game get playtested enough, there is bound to be a bug or two as its not possible to test for absolutely everything. Any bugs that do show will soon be squashed flat by Flayra and the Devs.

I know about the levels of cloaking Silver, I meant with full cloak. But anyhow I do also hope that the problem will be so scarce that it doesn't matter.

Actually, S&I's cloaking works like this, none of you are seeing anything wierd:

If you are MOVING while using the cloaking device, you are only semi-cloaked, you are still visible somewhat.

If you are STILL while using the cloaking device, you are nearly invisible if not invisible.

S&I works similar to NS when it comes to cloaking, however if your moving in NS (semi-fast) you become completely uncloaked.

This is the part where I could be a smart### and but put a picture that everyone has already seen and say there is a clocked alien there. Actually..I think there is a picture, but its from the player's POV who is playing the alien, but the other poeple are right next to him and they sure dont seem to notice.

I can tell you right now that being cloaked from the alien's perspective is a LOT different than from a marine's perspective. A LOT.

Not tracking ya here. I am not the brightest rusty nail in the  box though. So when you cloak, do you see your claws turn transparent, or do the stay the same and it just lets a message show you. In the shot it look as if the marines had no idea he was there at all, so I am guessing he was at least 2nd level. Hold on, let me find that shot.

I knew that... the thing I mention is a bug, an error, NOT a feature! When the guy in S&I is totally invisible to everyone else, been stood still for a while, to some peopel he's totally visible. Why I haven't a clue, probably hardware related, I guess some cards don't support the effect used to make something invisible. Maybe not.
Anyway as I stated before, it seems to be a rare occurance so no need to worry... hopefully.

Well, we've had about 100 testers playing NS for around 6 months, and no one ever ticketed a problem like that. Sounds like a S&I-specific bug.
