<div class="IPBDescription">I can see you!</div> How many people are able to spot cloaked aliens?

I find it pretty easy when walking towards you, especially when they get close.

I love it when I spot them walkin up to me, I dont shoot them till there real close and just about to bite, then I shotgun them in the face <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If they move and use cloak at the same time, that is easy to find them.
But in most cases, they camp, and it make the situation much harder.

News players that get killed while cloaking can sometimes be hard to shut up :/

it all depends on the lighting, the size/form of the cloaker and how he's moving. If he's in a dark spot and hanging on the ceiling without moving, chances are they're less visible than say an onos in the middle of eclipse MS crawling forward.

A tad annoying when they camp the areas outside base trying to distract you from say, seiging a hive, but its not that big a deal, half the time they are perfectly still and in ambush versus moving up to someone. Its better to go up a wall or ceiling then come from above imo.

Cloaking tends to be a bit tetchy about the floor you are walking on, any bumps they see you. The funnier way to play is to get silence, stand by a door way and lsiten for the footsteps. If you time it so you attack and kill them just before they come thorugh the doorway you get accused of cloaking, wall haxs everything :-)

Yah... using your ears has to be one of the biggest, most effective mad hacks in gaming history!!!

Back on topic. I have actually only seen cloaked forms on 3 occasions and these were in the most lighted spots i can imagine on a map where they were stupid enough to step through res node particles causing a graphical error that plainly points out the "nothingness" of an object.

Personally I actually think something needs to be done to cloaking to make the effect more unified regardless of the lighting of the area or the vid card that someone uses. Most people I can repeatedly walk up to (even as an onos) and never ever be seen until its simply too late for them even in these "well lit areas". Others can see me moving all the way down long dark hallways with little problem whatsoever. Whether it be an issue with their graphics card or them doing something with gamma settings or whatever to get an edge, the consistency between players view needs to be addressed. Honestly the only solution I can think of is to make the transparency to be 100% thus eliminating any chance that anybody can see the cloaked beast. That's what sensor sweeps and MT is for anyways so I don't really see a problem with that solution.

Cloakers... now that is an interesting thing right there...

When standing still, I can see them clear as day. A clear distortion shows up and a single shotgun shell can end the misery. However, if I am moving, it is very very hard to see them. But, I always check behind me, so if they run as I pass them up then its hard for me to miss them.

I myself, even WHEN cloaked, always walk on the floor anyway. I tend to avoid light areas, and still stay in dark areas. I do, however, have an acustom to hanging on ceilings, and waiting for them to pass just RIGHT under me, then I drop down and bite them as soon as I hit the ground.

    Skulk + Cloaking + Focus = Pwnage
  • PalinPalin Join Date: 2003-03-24 Member: 14848Members
I prefer Silence + Focus. It allows you to sneak up on rines from further away as you can let them (and many of their buddies) to pass while you wait in a vent then catch up with them and tear them apart before they know what hit them. Cloaking is almost worthless in Combat anyways because any decent player knows that one little upgrade pretty much puts all those cloaking skulks to bed. Granted, Silence can be countered decently with MT, but then so can Cloaking for the most part.

I can see cloakers pretty well when standing still due to my monitor. I have a laptop LCD - this means that I see 'trails' behind anything moving - it makes cloakers ridiculously easy to spot. If I'm on the move, however, it's nearly impossible to win at spot-the-alien.

Stupid combat player, focus is rarely used in NS, its not a practical skill unless you have sensory chambers around you and no scans, otherwise focus doesnt teach you any game skills...

Cannot say that I would had noticed them coming before the initial rush -skulks at least. Anything bigger is actually easy to spot, no matter how slow they are creeping. Jump + 180^ turn is often enough to save the day, skulks being as weak as they are.

the distortion cloak makes when moving is perfectly visible. I find the hard target a nonmoving one, but then again, I run so thats not a big isue.

The easiest time I have of spotting cloakers is in spores. The cloaker becomes clearly defined in the gas. I usually can't see cloakers unless they are right up near me, but if I know there is a cloaker, I can usually guess where he will be and I just give that area a shot.

I agree. Silent cloakers on the ceiling are dangerous. I can usually 1-bite kill marines that way. Usually meaning I get 2 to 3 kills if it's a group before I get downed. It's not always easy to get on ceilings, but if I'm heading head on into marines I try to.

As a sulk it's not a good idea to go running right into the marines head on. They see you and shoot you down before they get to you. It's much better to get some sulk friends and set a ambush trap for them.

Hmm... I wonder... Do marnes take locational damage? (ie. you bite them in the head it kills them in one hit)

No, it doesn't matter if you bite his nuts or his little toe off. It will be same pain for the marine.

It's actually easier on bad computers. I've noticed on my beast, I can spot cloakers quite easily. On a computer that's not made out of rock, however, it can become more difficult.

(Oh, btw- motion does not spot cloakers.)
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
motion spots cloakers not in a sensory range that are moving outside of your direct LoS.

I'd also think the video quality plays a role in how easy it is to spot a cloaked alien. I noticed that now that I have a quite horrible computer with settings turned down to a point even looking around makes color changes on some locations as well as weird artifacts (non heat related)

It's quite hard to distinguish an alien due to color changes as the whole wall changes along depending on how close I am and the angle I watch it at.

Against the water texture in upper sewer on ns...nothing?, it's really easy to see them. Killed about 7 "sneaky" skulks that way.

    ways i find cloakers:

    1. Listen -- keep tabs on what you hear, if you hear skulks move to the left and stop remember. Walk to where his sound stopped and find the most logical place for a cloaker. Shoot there, if you hit nothing or if you have no idea where he is at all --

    2. Jump back -- dont just jump backwards though -- perform one of those marine strafe jumps, this is done by moving your mouse in one direction and strafing in that same direction and jumping, with a little practice you can get this down. When jumping like this you gain a lot of ground and if you get hit have a huge potential to gain more ground from knockback.

All the other ways to kill cloakers involve lots of practice. Usually when I get attacked from the back reflexes will kill the skulk even if it had the advantage. Just use your instincts and pretty soon you'll realize why cloaking isnt that big of a deal -- in combat i just tell the other team they wasted a point.

You're almost impossible to spot in these situations because marine players don't look carefully at the ceiling <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I see cloakers very well, I use to have something in my config that made me see em even when moving but I can't anymore, don't know why.

Anyway in my book cloaking is lame, its slow and doesn't do good to get more skillfull, I only use it in classic if a sensory chamber is within range.

I someone kills me with focus cloak in combat, my death means nothing. I will defenitly get a bad impression on that person's skill. Anyway cloaking is totally useless at lvl 10, sof and focus are waaaay better. I would take anything before cloaking if the servers goes beyond lvl 10.
