How To Make A New Skin For A Model.

How do I create like a "template" to skin on. As you can tell I'm very new to skinning, and am trying to re-skin the default NS pistol. I have HLMV, and know how to export the skin, but how would I go on from there? Like is there a way to just keep the outline of the skin and take everything else away? I have Photoshop 7.
Thanks in advance,
Waffles

did you export the texture, or the UV layout? actually i dont know if you can export the uv layout, but if you can't, just printscreen with the UV layout showing (but dont overlay the texture) and open it in photosop, crop accordingly. then you can go to select -> color range -> shadows. cut that and past into a new layer and delete the old layer. then you can paint your skin with the wirefram as a guide. I hope you understand waht I'm saying

yes, he just wants the skinmaps, if you have jeds hlmv you can overlay the uv maps while previewing the model, hit printscreen and crop it to the texture size and there you have your template

If you use HLMV 1.2 you can just press "Export UV Map" and export just the unskinned UV Map.
