how do they do it?
well, this gmail thing seems to be growing at an exponential rate... how are they going to be able to offer 1 gig, for free, to the probably tens of thousands of people signing up right now? I guess the idea is that no one can really send 1 gig of e-mail, and by the time people start getting close to that in a couple years, 1 gig will be the sort of thing we laugh at, like floppy disks.
that said, weren't they offering 2 gigs per account just a few days ago, or was I imagining that?
also, do you think we're in danger of them ever cutting the service short out of nowhere? will it ever become a pay service? or should I feel safe giving it out as my permanent new e-mail address?
talk amongst yourselves.

They have the space! I had a presentation at school about google, they are running one of the gratest server farms worldwide, thousands of redhat linux servers, just for the search part, and it is still free .
If i had to choose which company i trust most, it would be google...
I'd say it's a safe bet that it'll be free forever, and it's safe to give out. But then again, what the crap do I know?
Something else would not maky sence.
Think about how cool those massive serverfarms would be. It'd be like the human energy harvesting pods in the Matrix, except not humans. They'd even have robots flying around to tend to the servers and ones that went around the Earth and abducted more, too.
I foresee Google as the cause of the rise of the machines.
Comp, what did I tell you? I *know* storage memory is cheap, but it still costs real money.
Silly Canadian.
All other companies who offer email accounts could do the same, but they would earn much less money, and they don't want that to happen don't they...
*wonders if he can get more free gmail <>_<>*
I get the 2Gb one as I use BTYahoo as my provider, and my normal Yahoo account went up to 100Mb free of charge.
A computer reads your email using the same methods that the Google search engine uses. It picks out keywords and uses them to display text-based ads next to your email.
So if you receive an email from your friend saying "I just bought a new house!" you might see an ad on the sidebar that says "Looking to buy a new home?"
That's all there is to it.
Gonna quote this until answered.
Or just go towww.gmailswap.com, offer somethig creative (note, don't offer nude pics of someone or stupid things) and get your invite in seconds.
BTW
Use the search luke....
That said, Time magazine had a big article on google, and how they are suspected to own the most powerful single computer on earth.

I believe you meant the most powerful single "server farm".
