How Does One

<div class="IPBDescription">live on an island?</div> Hi

One of my dreams is to live alone on an island, far away from this world, and more importantly, far away from society. It would be my greatest dream to die in a "Robinson Crusoe/Cast Away" fashion. Preferably, an island near Fuji, uninhabited by humans and uninhabited by animals that will chew me up.

First, we have the financial costs, which are not important at the moment; lets look at the realistic side of things, like transportation.

I' am not joking.

Your thoughts? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    first you gotta decide: agriculture, or overseas imports?

    or making a drug farm and using that to get rich :o

    I don't think this will work... Where would you get broadband? And don't give me satellite! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The internet is a part of society. He wants away from that...

    Living on an island by yourself would require a lot of planing as to what you could eat/grow. There wouldn't be any meat... You may be able to fish, but anything that you kill other than that would go to waste and rot in the tropical sun.

    You'd have to think about shelter beforehand, possably bring materails with you because it would probably be pretty hard to make somthing relyablr with what nature gives you on your island.

    This is a great idea. IMO, every human should do somthing like this for a year or so in their lifetime. It's good for the mind if you're strong minded... Else it would kill you/drive you insane...

    Have fun on your island!

    Grow tropical fruits and live like a squirrel. No kidding either. Store some in for winter, eat some in summer.

    And of course, you can't live alone on a uninhabited island without ants. So be sure to get some insecticide/carnivorous plants to take care of them.

    You can fish as well. That would be, if you like to eat fish.

    And I never thought anyone ever said this......

    Nanites.

    I always though this or living in a small Harvest Moon-ish enviroment would be the best living your ending days.

    If you live on an island, you'll end up doing drugs 24/7....just like the kids of Hawaii! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> jk

    Oh, from the original poster I got the impresion that he wanted an actual self sufficent house on an island; not just living off the land.

    Did someone say Hawaiian mushrooms?? OY! Na, actually that would probably disillusion me with thoughts of forming a "Dr.Moreau" type of island. And that would be plain ol' wack.

    I suppose a hijacking of an oil tanker would do. I don't really think them immigrants would mind, hell they'd probably band up with me. It only takes three to form a society, eh?

    From a serious point, I think the most important things to be considered, would be the type of food that are edible on a tropical island, and how to obtain such. A nice 12 inch blade would be very handy.

    LOL don't worry about housing. He'd probably find a cave or chop down wod and build a hut.

    As for transportation....well, ships are totally out of the picture with all new safety technology that won't shipwreck you.

    I suggest you hire a commercial plane that has lots of fuel (and I mean LOTS!) and fly over the eastern Pacific. The Pacific is plentiful with islands so you shouldn't have trouble with it.

    Unless you unfortunately stumble into native tribes which scalp you and wear your skin for clothes.....eep!

    I would suggest bringing a small supply of food with you, just until you can get the hang of fishing/ hunting/ etc. So it isn't a completely dire emergency if you fail the first few times.

    You would be really bored. There isn't much to do, and you are by yourself. Even Robinson Crusoe had Friday, and Castaway man had his volleyball (but that led to his demise). I would not know what I would do all tha time.

    I'm not to sure that I believe you truly understand the impact of living on an island by yourself. I would speculate that being brought up in a society of modern age the effects of living on an island would be very hard to withstand.

    my thoughts exactly. Living on an island alone, now that you have been brought up in a urban environment, would be catastrophic to your psychological state.

    1) Find a BIG island, maybe about a mile or something. Water rises/big tital wave or something your house = screwed, plus you need lots of room and stuff for growing food.

    2) Bring supplys: Transportation if you say **** this im leaving, fishing stuff maybe, hatchet/knife, lots of string, other supplies. Definentaly something to start fires with.

    3) make sure you prepare for the worst if you actualy do this, there are plenty of things like earthquakes or something that would really make life miserable.

    Really, I find this nearly impossable to do w/o outside help every once in awhile, so i hope you have nice parents <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
