<div class="IPBDescription">being modded!</div> so me and my friend are currently modding moo3 from the craptacular piece of bastardization that dares to call itself part of the moo series.

I'd like to ask for suggestions for improvements (minor/balancing requests please - no requests for 'omg code in ub4rl337 diplomacy').

Also, if anyone knows, which value in which file corresponds to the number of planets generated per star system? I've looked and I can't decipher some of the field names. It's really annoying to have to manage 400+ planets. We were going to try to reduce that. We already reduced the number of stars spawned, but that's only a temporary hack, since that creates undesirable side-effects (much more likely to start near system specials now...which sometimes traps you in a single star system).

Right now we're addressing the problem of beams sucking fagtastically in comparison to missiles and fighters. Since point-d weapons are buggy, and don't always shoot when they're supposed to, missiles and fighters completely roxor anyone with beam-only. This is even more pronounced if you ever tried to use long-range beam attack.

Make it into an updated version of MoO 2

XP compatible MOO2 would be very satisfactory.

Its a shame, MOO3 is on my shelf and imho unplayable. Its nice, up to a point, when you realise the game's buggered. GG Infogrammes, now Atari, but the name change isn't an attempt to sucker you into buying new games, nooo.

First off, no matter what other changes you make, make <i>sure</i> you mod all descriptions and tooltips for tech, senate proposals, random sitRep events, or other thingies so that they <i>specifically</i> what changes they make. If I see a random event in my sitrep that says "so-and-so reduced the heavy foot of government," even if it only did so by 0.1%, I want to be able to read that it reduced it by 0.1%. I want to be able to see a tangible number that proves to me that laser miniaturization did something to help me. In short, if it's got a number associated with it, I want to be able to see that number by either reading the description right there or hovering the mouse for a tooltip. I shouldn't need to consult gameFaqs or a mod readme/changelist to see exact stats for something in-game, I should be able to read it ingame.
I can't imagine this being any more difficult than changing a number of text files, so please do take the time for it.

I mainly want the old system of tech and base biulding back. With the old kind you could actully easily control your bases and how things were built by have actual numbers for production, science, and population.

I dunno, 90% of my preferred games die without DOS.

    Step up X-Com, MOO, etc

X-Com works on XP. The problem you are probably experiencing is garbled graphics, which has nothing to do with XP, and can be easily fixed with a <a href='http://www.xcomufo.com' target='_blank'>fan made patch</a>. I've never played MOO or MOO2, but if they don't work right off the bat, chances are that some command line tweak, fan made patch, emulator, or cpu slowdown program will fix them.

I got MOO2 running under XP without any problems...

You'd prolly be better off modding moo2.

I'm just going off to dirty my trousers.

If I don't post for a week, you know what I'm playing *wink*

ugh, balancing this is harder than i thought.

@all the "moo2" requests...that's probably possible, but way too much work. some of the stuff from moo2 wasn't even implemented. I don't think moo3 can even be called an "alpha" release, there's so much crap that they left the code out for because of time constraints.
@marik: There's already an 'encyclopedia mod' that corrects all the wrong/undocumented tooltip/tech descriptions, i believe.

I can't seem to get Terror From the Deep working on XP. Maybe I just suck though and have a corrupted version or something.

The worst part is, I own the damn game, but because my CD is stuffed I can't install the version I have. So I have to rip the CD to be able to use it. Unfortunately, I have a bug that does two things:

    1) Cannot go up to the 3rd 'level' of any area, or the game crashes and corrupts the save.

    2) Sometimes the game will crash every time upon hitting end turn.

Drives me nuts, because I so want to play this game again and I've tried everything. I know of the collectors edition for the game however, but I just can't find a New Zealand site/game store that will import it for me.

I'm going nuts and I need help!

And Wheee, if you can mod Moo3 to make it like Moo 2 or get Moo 2 working on XP, I will make you my official God and make a little idol to you and stuff.

    Have you tried <a href='http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1' target='_blank'>DOSBox</a>?

There's a separate tftd graphics patch, try that!

    HAHA! You are WINNAR!!!!!

Thank you very much, it worked perfectly with Terror From the Deep and I can play Moo2.

Not to mention my recent discovery of the windows collectors edition of X-Com.

    I am in heaven!

yeah, dosbox is great, it even lets you scale your cpu for those old games that run too fast <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> i had to use dosbox when replaying x-com recently, but moo2 seems to be working fine for me (win2k).
