Ok here the situation. We were doing a mini-lan at my friend's appart.

We decided to play ns with some bots before playing online so we could mess around a bit.

So me and my friens start up steam, login and start to play. Meanwhile i got my other friend cursing and yelling at his comp. He wasn't able to log in steam. He could change his steam password but not play games. After a couple of try he could not connect to steam at all.

He then formated his comp reinstalled steam to no better effect..

Now he was like FFS ! I paid for that stupid game and i can't play wth is this BS steam crap. ( all this when one of my friend were playing on the net, and he could not connect )

then the day after steam decided to let him play.
SOOOO !

is there a way we can play NS WITHOUT STEAM so we know it will work 1005 of the time. ESPECIALLY when i' will organize my annual 16 player LAN where we dont have an internet connection

BTW we all got our good old HL CD

You don't need an internet connection anymore for steam to work on a LAN and NS3.0 won't work properly on HL 1.1.1.0

I don't know if it works with NS, but in CS:CZ we just typed "connect [server_computers_name/IP]".

You can start steam in offline mode but you have to stay logged in beforehand (at least IIRC, look for something about 'offline mode' in steam).

The beta builds can be played via WON-HL. It won't exactely make a polished impression as some parts of 3.0 have been specifically coded for Steam (see the new chat code), but it should be sufficient for a LAN. For this, one person has to have a Steam-install of NS.

Once you're wired up, let everyone copy your 'nsp' folder into their WON-HL installations. Do so yourself. Voilá, a slightly bruised version of 3.0, easily playable on LAN.

Is it just your internet connection he cant connect to steam on? if so he could go home get the updates, then Click "Exit" (DO NOT CLICK "EXIT AND LOGOUT). Then when he restarts steam at your house make sure the net is not connected and it will give him the offline mode option.

This is a very big problem with steam, and they can't seem to get it quite right. I have problems with steam WEEKLY, I think its my ISP, but storms come through this area alot so it could be they just can't keep everything fixed without something else breaking from lighting. Anyway, if you can't get on steam at all, you can't play on a lan. Basically, if you do happen to have problem getting on steam, it stands to reason you haven't been able to log in recently, so you'll probably be screwed. Sure, you can start steam in offline mode, but only if you got on steam recently and were playing. If you've ever logged out you won't be able to do CRAP until you can log back in.

    Steam sucks.

You can play NS on steam in "offline" mode. I have played NS3.0b4a whatever with bots on my LAN listen server n works like a charm.

Yea with steam they need to make it so that once u have registerd once with that install u can start it anytime... weather u have exited and loged off ur what not... i know of other software that is server based for logons... but it will let u still log on as the last user or 2 eaven if it cant connect to the other server. They do need to do something about steam and its logon methods... now with playing on lan it seems that its all up to the current steam update... it seems some have it and some dont. Last i read LAN's had to be connected to the net so that steam could work... but theres probably more to it now.

Download Counter-Strike 1.6 LAN-version, and then copy your nsp-folder to the Valve folder.

This way someone can put up a LAN-server (if he is using steam) that the other clients connect to, and if he then sets sv_lan 0 and sets a region sv_region then other players will also be able to connect via WAN. Pretty handy.

    Btw, no cdkey required.

As some1 said, download the 1.6 cs lan version. OR when i had my last lan, we played beta 3 at old hl, worked fine, no problems

Ots as simple as copying nsp out of your steam directory and into your original half life folder. Or create a shortcut to the HL.EXE in the steam folder and type in the target box "-console -game nsp"

Yes, you have to have an up-to-date version of the game for this to show up. Is it so much to ask for you to have Steam up to date (considering it auto-updates) BEFORE you go to a LAN party? Jeeze.
