<div class="IPBDescription">"my eyes!"</div> UPDATE: b1 is out! <a href='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_b1.zip' target='_blank'>http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_b1.zip</a>
Mirror (thanks Kabelen): <a href='http://kabelen.freeunixhost.com/maps/co_ares_b1.zip' target='_blank'>http://kabelen.freeunixhost.com/maps/co_ares_b1.zip</a>

co_ares is set on Ares B-12 Research and Development facility on the planet Ares. The planet has a red colour and it gets very hot during the days, but during the nights it gets really cold instead (like a desert). Ares B-12 has been mining minerals and rocks to examine the last month. However, when they had dig as deep as a few kilometers below the surface, they had a jam in one of the rock processing machines. Turns out one of the rocks was carrying bacterium and had infested the whole processing room before anyone noticed, due to system malfunctions. Quickly the Ares crew started a "lockdown", closing down most parts of the Ares facility to stop the bacterium from spreading. The TSA was sent in to clean up. They landed outside in a small landing area, and left a command chair and two armories in Mineral Smelting.

Yeah, crappy backstory, but I'll work on it later. Anyway, here are some screens (you might have seen some before - also keep in mind some of these are not gamma corrected):

Pathway through a mountain:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20001.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20002.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Main access corridor:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20008.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20009.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20010.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
A small non-infested processing unit (the rock moves on the conveyor belt):
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20011.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Random hallway leading to mineral smelting:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20012.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Marine start - mineral smelting:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20014.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20017.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Small landing area (the glowing sign texture in the second pic is gonna be changed so the text is read more easily):
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20018.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20019.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Unnamed corridor (there is supposed to be steam rising from beneath the grate, the but the PS does not seem to work):
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20020.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20021.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Broken corridor:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20022.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20023.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20024.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Hive - main processing unit:
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20025.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20026.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
<img src='http://bruteforce.shatteredminds.net/co_ares_build20027.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

(there are more but I can't post any more images in this post)

Well, enjoy. The map is about 75% done, probably. Just a hiveroom and a few corridors left, plus vents and various changes.

By the way, some of you might remember an old co_ares. I lost the source to that one, so now I made this one which is (imo) alot better.

    Nice dark feel youve got there. Its also very clean, all in all a nice job. PLaytests plz <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    Are you going to consider more open areas, as it does seem to be mostly corridor. Some changes of level may be good too. Mind you i can't see the whole map and something nice and tight may be a nice change. I would go with it how it is unless the gameplay needs work.

    looks to have a lot of atmosphere, but it also seems quite large, not that that's a bad thing <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    kolokol: Thanks, and yes, you're right, it is alot of corridors but I think it will even out because there are several spots for the aliens to hide and ambush at.

    <b>Shdwstal</b> - Looking good. has a very original feel to it. From reading your backstory there are a few things that you could do to add to the atmosphere a bit more.. perhaps a sign of hurried escape? you've got a lot of crates sitting around perhaps have one knocked over with the contents spilled on to the floor? Doesn't have to be that, but something to suggest a lived in state... I live in a real working class mining area (in Wollongong for those Australians here - just south of Sydney for those who don't)...and I know first hand how laborers leave things on a friday afternoon...something perhaps to suggest that they have been mining? even if it's just in the areas where they were digging...

    Just a thought I guess...

    Good work though...very nice...very original...love it..

    Ah, very good idea. I shall look into this. Thinking of getting some worldmodels of some tools and stuff, possibly. Also, I like the idea with a tipped over crate.

    I'm currently working on a wrecked hallway, complete with infestation, murky water, broken walls, dripping, and steam. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    It reminds me of some of quake 2's later levels and the ocean lab from deus ex.

    Excellent feel!

    looks pretty good. some of the walls, etc are a bit blocky and plain, but the simplicity just might work. some of the corridors seem long but at least there is cover. i would add more vertical/level over level. multiple levels in CO makes gameplay 10x better.

    You might want to either edit the pictures into links, resize them or lower their quality. It's taking ages to load on a 4000/512 connection <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    Lordy: Thanks. That was the first part of the map I did, actually.

    Skydancer: Thanks.

    tommyd: Hmm, quite hard to incorporate level over level with the way the map looks right now, but I'll see what I can do. Maybe I'll do a third hallway/path that goes above the whole map. Thanks for the comments though. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Thanks Recoup.

    Here are some new screenshots.

    Broken and infested hallway (there is sparking, dripping, steam, etc in game):
    <img src='http://shdwstal.temporal-sands.com/co_ares_build20022.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    <img src='http://shdwstal.temporal-sands.com/co_ares_build20023.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    Inside a wall (well, almost):
    <img src='http://shdwstal.temporal-sands.com/co_ares_build20024.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Currently working on the hiveroom.
    Also, I'll be going on vacation for two weeks starting tomorrow, so I'm afraid I'll have to let the map wait while I'm away.

    You have a nice fog effect going on in the screenshot of Main Access Corridor, (looks that way from the screenshot anyway <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    I like.

    Rise from the dead! That's right, after almost three weeks I've resumed work on co_ares, and to show for it I now have the somewhat finished co_ares HIVEROOM! Many hours were spent in moving vertices, but I think it was worth it.

    Rock Processing M-04
    (note; the hive has only grown in Ares for max 1 week, however the highly resourceful earth made the bacterium grow 4 times as fast)
