POP is just the protocol to talk to the mail severs. You can set the clients to leave messages on the server - I did that a while ago when I had email programs on both windows and linux (since I never knew which I'd be using at the time).
It also meant I could read my mail at uni using the webmail interface (obviously not gmail, I have web hosting which gives me POP3 and webmail and a heap of other goodies)

this would require me to use an email program...
It would also sorta destroy most of the point of GMail (the 1 gig storage is nice, but not the main point).
As I have only used Pine up until now, I tihnk I will actualy be giving GMail's interface a shot.
