    I'm curious about what city this took place in. I remember hearing that in San Fransisco you actually need a permit to do any form of street performance (not so much a way of collecting taxes, more a way of making sure each performer had their turn at heavy-traffic areas like trolley stations), and their skill level/financial need ranged from devout religious singers who didn't even <i>accept</i> money all the way to Blue-man-group imitators (dressed and painted in silver) who welcomed every dime.
