Hiding Icons From Notification Area

really hiding them
Is there any way to remove an icon that is in the notification area, as in really remove it? Whenever I google it just says that "hide" option so you can just press the little arrows to pop them back up. I'd like to know if it's possible to remove a specific icon totally in order for it not to show up anymore.

Also, if it's not too much, is there any way to protect a process from being shut down by the task manager?

if anyone could help it would be much appreciated. I don't like my applications to be closed down by the first guy who passes *cough* father *cough* because he thinks that they are bad for the computer when they really are not

most applications have an option called "show in tray" ... other than that, you could use res hacker to remove the arrows picture from explorer.exe (or remove the trayicon from the app and replace it with something harmless)

and why did ms have to call it the "xp notification area"? it's called teh system tray

well I did check tweakui but I can't see this hiding option. It's either everything or hiding it altogether, yet I want some icons still there as not to arouse his suspicion

There's a way you can turn the whole thing off alltogether w/ a registry hack (you can google it) but as far as picking and choosing individual icons to hide w/o there being an option in the program to do it, I don't think that's possible.

well it's for my computer, and if it's to hide porn my dad would have done much much worse to me than just close it down...

Thanks Doom, that's the answer I've been (not) wanting to hear but at least I know my search isn't totally useless

Maybe it would be possible to change the graphic used in the system tray somehow? So you could change it to the network icon or something. Don't know how, but its something to look up.
