<div class="IPBDescription">NEED EPIC FEELING BEFORE ALL IS LOST</div> Hi. I was wondering if someone could tell me a way to find NS 1.04 servers.
You know 1.04. Back when hive restrictions made the game more then "lets wait around for heavyarmor/onos".
Back when the games were truley epic.
The new version is great, with the fixes and additions, but the change in gameplay was bad. So bad, i've burnt out in a week of playing it. Within the first 5 minutes I know who is going to win.
I would really, REALLY appricate it if someone could help me out.
I loved NS, and miss it very much.
(If Dev is reading... please keep additions and fixes but tweak gameplay back to 1.04 style. COMBAT and the other versions are going to give us the FAST PACED action we need. Please make NS 1.04 VERSION 2.0)

First 2 are german and the 3rd is US.
Part of what led to the 'epic' / nostalgic effect was that most of our players were arguably new to the game. A point wich arguably made the game that much more fun because we were ABLE to have such long back and forth struggles. Nowadays its been reduced to use X strategy against Y... or maybe even use X strategy or lose. To much focus on 'winning' the game and not near enough in 'playing' the game. Personally I'd rather see the game move away from 'target the CC/Hive' to win the game and more into a more elaborate 'map control = points/time unit' and simply end the match after a given amount of time. Add some perks to being the low man to encourage more tradeoffs of map control... remove scoreboards altogether... basically add more incentive to play the game rather than win the game.
Then again, who am I (or any of us for that matter) to tell the devs they need to do something different. After all, it is THEIR game.
That made for intense action, instead of everyone jacking around till they auto-accumulate enough res for hmg/heavyarmor/onos.
You would discard a whole game due to one flaw?
If I offered you a Ferrari with a scratch on the door, do you still want the car?

Except that scratch limited the car to going a block before the engine caught on fire, nice job.
I'm tired of hearing about how great, and "EPIC" 1.04 was. I played 1.04 back in the day, and sure it was fun, but it was flawed. If there ever was an epic game, it only lasted until the JP HMG Rush arrived at the hive.
As far as I'm concerned we shouldn't life in the past, nostalgia wears off, but the current incarnation of NS is as good as the game ever was. Just go play it, and if you want the "epic" feeling back, go to #nspug and join one of their games.
3.0 is good and all, a lot of improvements, but the game is to fast paced and we'll it just doesn't seem as good as it used to be. Before re-locations were smart and useful, now I hardly ever see them.
I don't know, I think peices off CO_ chipped of on NS_ and screwed up the gameplay... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Second, 1.04 is a hell of a lot more fun than 3.04.
Ok, there were flaws with 1.04. FIX THE FLAWS, FIX THE BUGS, ADD IN SOME OF THE NEW ADDITIONS, AND BRING BACK 1.04 STYLE GAMEPLAY.
These 20 minute, know whos gonna win in the first 5 minutes, jack around till we get heavy/onos is lame as all hell. LAME AS ALL HELL.
You say I don't have to play. I don't. I won't. Good riddence to me, yes. More will leave, and more and more, especially if 5.0 dosent fix the gameplay lameness.
I strongly suggest to the makers of this great game:
CO_ for fast paced action. NS_ for long, epic games
Not two fast paced deathmatches

so what would be the best option? Fixing up the scratch (that causes engine fire) and have a nice car, or removing everything that makes it a car, then stick in things to make it a boat?
Basically, if the jp/hmg rush is the only fault you can find in it, then wouldnt simple number tweaks the only thing it needs?
Version 1 only seems like the holy grail because it was new and exciting to you at the time. Pub games seemed to have many strats, and early on in clan matches there seemed to be a lot of scope because nobody knew the winning strat(s) yet. Get over it. I played 1.04 at a LAN with a bunch of mates/clan buddies recently and I thought it was a totally frustrating and boring experience.
As soon as everyone realises that it's <u>them</u> who have possibly changed so much rather than the game, I'll be happy. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I played in 381 pubs in 1.04. Half of them were over fast by jp/hmg. The rest were finished by either marines who had locked down 2 hives and spent 5 hours teching up every upgrade and marching into the hive with HA trains to kill skulks, or aliens who got the second hive up but were too stupid to crack a marine base turtled in the 3rd hive location.
And rennex is totally right, it was nothing amazing. If by "epic" you mean either skulks getting destroyed after sitting around for an hour while the rines teched, jp/hmg vs hive, or acid spam ftw, then yes, I guess that made it epic.
I dont really care if 1.0x's 'epic' thing was real or not. Flayra should be aiming to make a version that IS 'epic', even after most of the strats were figured out.
edit: and the whole "it felt good because its new" thing is just retarded. By the time we had NS 1.04, most of us has already played the game for hours every nights for many months. Now, if 1.0x managed to stay "new" and "exciting" for MONTHS, its already beaten 2.0, and for some, 3.0.
I also liked having 20 FPS at the time. =|
I'm afraid you've been living in the past. Allow me to get you caught up.
The flaws in 1.04 have already been fixed, and it was called 2.01. Beta 2 had some flaws of its own, those flaws have since been fixed and the game is now known as Beta 3.
You're welcome.
And just for clarification, 1.04 itself wasn't epic. But it allowed for the possibility of 'epic' 2-4 hour games much more than any version *I* have experienced (I came in midway through 1.04 myself). Since 2.0 came out I have been a part of maybe 3 games that lasted longer than an hour. Before that, I almost had one 'epic' game a day.... sometimes two.
Sure there were definite problems with 1.04 and you COULD rush for JP/HMG as fast as possible and end the game in 5 minutes, but many people didn't because it was understandably not fun... even to the winning team. Most of the people *I* played with played the game to have fun and though winning was an objective it wasn't the reason for playing. It was only when a couple of hardass veterans joined the game that the JP/HMG rushes started happening... they were simply more intent on winning a round than enjoying the game. Maybe that was what constituted fun for them, but it usually left the rest of us feel as if we had just wasted our time because none of the rest of us really had fun.
And to say that being new made it more fun (even over a duration of many months) is perfectly valid. The concept is not based around how many hours said player had played, but how much knowledge of the game said player had acquired. Simply said, people were exploring strategies moreso than simply implementing strategies. Nowadays people complain if you stray from the 'winning formulae' and it stifles any tactical creativity to be quite frank. It has turned into how well can you instrument the winning strat(s). Honestly I'd rather win by a cleverly executed accident or brute force determination in the face of damning odds than by some set in stone method to success.
Like many have said before, make some fixup 1.04 and add in some of the improvements that came with the later versions and I honestly think we'd have a VERY solid version.
After trying to join the server's protocol was older then my client how retarded.

No, 2.0 was the "2nd experience" 1.05 (unofficial patch, adressing all said issues brought forth by teh rennex with the help of AMX) was our salvation, to be truth, 1 sucked, 2 scuked and 3 certainly sucks as well. Now I know that at march/june last year people were getting a tad bored with the playstyle of NS and started anticipating 2.0 but to be perfectly truth, 2 and 3 butchered NS
Edit: I started playing when 1.03 was released and I saw it on the front page of fileplanet.com
1.04 games too long? Well, we have somthing called combat now if you want fast paced games. There are also other variations on the way. From the ones that have been announced, I would say most of thoes are fast paced as well. We have enough fast paced on its way, bring back the long games so it feels like you've acomplished somthing.
You take 1.04 style gameplay, and fix out the lameities. How hard is that for you guys to figure out? I wouldn't want him to bring back 1.04. I'd want 1.04 v 2.0.
-fades phasing into marine spawn
-acid rocket ownage
-bilebomb for fades
-2nd hive being an almost instead win
-turning off skulk bite animation and averaging 50 kills a round
-hiding in alien rt's
-the pic of the last marine hiding inside the hive
-aliens that hide in unreachable spots at the end of the game
-jp marines taht do the same
-crouch bug
-crouch jump bug
-nancy (havent played 3.0 nancy)
-building stuff outside on nancy
-building on the outside platform in hera and then beaconing back inside

-dropping buildings on aliens to stop them destroying your base
-rarely seeing an onos
Yes 1.04 was awesome and i wouldnt mind playing it again. atm i can only play 2.0 until i steal a cd key that hasnt been used for steam.
Most all of it is fixed. Put the fixes and tweaks onto 1.04 style gameplay.
And natural selection is fun again.
